Cure acid reflux?

My dog seems to have acid reflux - how long will it take for Pepcid to "cure" it?

  • My shih tzu has had symptoms of acid reflux since Wed night. He ate his food all that night - not split up like usual, and I know this is a main cause of acid reflux. We called our vet yesterday, and he said to administer Pepcid in the AM and PM. We started this yesterday. He does seem a little better today; however, his symptoms are not gone completely (of course!). I was hoping for that miracle cure in one tablet, but I know that's a little unrealistic. :) My vet said to keep him on it for at least a week. Does it usually take a few days for his symptoms to completely clear? His main symptoms are excess salivation/regurgitation in his throat, incessantly licking his nose (stressed out), and he is not as excited to play with his squeaky toys. Otherwise, he is acting completely normal. Thanks!

  • Answer:

This question would be better in 'Dog's' section. Pepsid may well help after a week but Sucralfate, which is also good at relining the stomach, would have been better. You may need to ask your vet for Zantac or Omeprazole if the dog has a long term problem.
