Could this be lactose intolerance?

Question about Lactose Intolerance?

  • Hey I have a question about lactose intolerance. My grandfather "was" lactose intolerant but now he can drink a cup of milk everyday with no problems. I also have had a couple of friends who've said the same thing. They were lactose intolerant but after constantly drinking milk daily, they say theyre completely fine now. I've done a little research on it and I've found that lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose) is just in smaller quantities in people and that is what causes the symptoms. And also lactase production cannot be increased nor can the rate of decline of production of lactase be slowed. So my question is, are the so called scientists wrong in this? Because I've had some pretty powerful testimonials by people I know that their lactose intolerance has been cured. And I've seen them drink milk with no problems. Any info and links would be appreciated.

I would really like to know this as well. I hate being lactose intolerant. My stomach swells and I vomit everytime I eat/drink something with lactose in it (even if it's a tiny amount). I tried drinking a glass of milk everyday and it didn't help me (and made me look like I was bulimic in front of my family).

Honestly I don't know, but it's possible that they just got used to it. Even if you're not digesting milk, you might not have symptoms of lactose intolerance, so it's possible that they still don't produce lactase, but just don't know it because they feel fine. In case you didn't know, it's actually more normal to be lactose intolerant. Most of the world is lactose intolerant. Asians and Africans are two populations that are very predominantly intolerant. It's just that our perception is skewed because European populations can usually tolerate it and we're used to it being a part of our culture. But many people are lactose intolerant and just don't know it.

I'm curious, too. I used to be lactose intolerant (got the runs if I drank milk, ate yoghurt/too much cheese/too much ice-cream), but over the years I've just gotten better. I can drink milk now (but I still drink soy milk because it tastes better, and I can't have a lot of milk), and I don't have to watch how much cheese or ice-cream I eat. Don't know about yoghurt, I hate the stuff, so I haven't attempted to eat any.

There's lactose free milk and it's been available for quite awhile now.
