How often is it safe to have a CT scan for kidney stones?

Kidney Stones?

  • In July I was diagnosed w/kidney stones. Woke up in middle of night w/worse pain ever..etc. CT scan showed 1 stone in right many in left kidney. Said they were small enough to pass.. Ok. Here we are 4 months later.. I dont think I have passed anything the severe pain died down but now seems to be returning. Over the past couple days I have this constant ache in my back and gotta go to bathroom feels like all the time.. How long will it take these things to pass and can you pass them and not know?? I think I would know I have heard it really hurts coming out. And yes I drink a ton of water every day.. so much so I feel bloated!!!

  • Answer:

Kidney stones are a build up of calcium in the kidneys and as you described can be extremely painful. Sometimes they can pass on their own when you go to the toilet, however sometimes they grow too large and cause blockages and other complications. People that get kidney stones usually have them re-occur, so you may have passed the original one but have a new one developing.

You will know when you pass them. It is very painful and if they are large enough, you will hear them tink on the toilet. My dad has had several. The past couple of times, his never passed, they did another MRI and found they were too large. He had the laser surgery to break them up. You should let your doc know that they haven't passed and the pain is getting worse. If they have set up an infection in your kidneys, it is serious.

It sounds like you still might have them around, but on a lesser magnitude or they very well could be from the previous stones. You might want to double check on that again because you just never know, perhaps they may be able to use ultrasound waves and break them up that way, the wonders of medical science!
