How To Lose A Lisp?

How to cure a lisp without a theripest.?

  • Hello there, first off I'd like to thank you for taking the time to respond and take the time to answer my question. My name is Ryan and I'm 16 years old in grade 11. I have a lisp, as you've read from the title, and I'm interested in curing it once and for all. My life has changed since I've found out I have a lisp. For one, when I found out I have a lisp, I started controlling my speech. I would lean away from saying soft s/s like "snake" or "sweet" or even words like "nice". I would start thinking of all the words in my head, put a sentence together and then say it. The lisp has affected my life dramaticy, unlike some stories I've read, people still have no problems talking publicly with a lisp, but I can't do that. I have a terrible fear of reading stories, speeches, or anything I can't personally make up and control in front of the public. This has had a huge impact on my life, and I've been afraid to get a job because of it (interviews and them asking my age) and being very shy in front of new people. I remember going to school speech therapy and saying words that were printed on cards. A nice lady would come to my class, knock on the door and bring me to a room to practice speech. Of course at such a young age, I didn't understand the importance of proper speech and word pronunciation. The school speech requested I go to a school after school for further speech therapy, of course like I said, I didn't understand the importance of this matter, so I complained to my mother, and asked to be dropped out of the speech therapy. This was at the young age of 11 or so, so I didn't know why, or what I was doing at the school, after school. If that makes sense, let's continue. Basically I went to another building after school to work on speech pronunciation and asked to be dropped out because I didn't understand why or what I was doing there. My lisp developed when I was around the age of 6-8. I personally can't really hear myself lisp through my voice when I hear myself talking, but I have heard myself on recordings and such and know I do, in fact have a lisp. I also have a lisp on "r" such as my name "Ryan" or something like "Right" the "r" lisp is no where as serious as the "s" lisp, in fact I have no problem saying "r" words in front of people because it is hardly noticeable. Now that I've given you some background information, I would like to ask my question. I would like to know how to fix my lisp, and doing this, all without going to a theripest. I have talked to my mom about getting me into another speech therapy class after school at a institute building or something, but she has looked arround (and so have I) and it seems there's not much support in my area. I live in Welland Ontario, Canada if that information helps. I would like to have my lisp cured, doing personal classes that I can work on myself. I am a very dedicated person and when it comes to this, I would really love for this burden to be lifted off my shoulders. I will do what ever it takes to cure my lisp, and if you find a class or institution around my area, I'm all ears! If you can go over some valuable methods of curing a lisp, some methods I can practice alone and with someone else that would be great. Give me as much information as possible, anything helps, and I thank you so much for reading and considering my post here. Thank you, Ryan.

  • Answer:

Ok, so the treatment I do with patients with lisp's is to teach correct tongue placement. A lisp is done mostly when saying words with a "s" in it. SOme people have a list on other sounds too! What you need to do is sit in front of a mirror and practice saying words and making sure you place you tongue in the correct positions. For instance if you have a lisp with "s" words, practice saying words while making sure you place your tongue behind your teeth. You will need to practice this a lot. the more you practice the more your speech will improve and your lisp disappear. If you wanted to get a great book that has words in all different positions to practice with, you need the Webber's Jumbo Book of Articulation. You could probably find it on Ebay. If there are none on Ebay try Amazon or this website: www.superduperinc.com. You need to practice single words first. Once you have mastered single words move up to two or three words at a time, then phrases, and finally sentences. I promise, the more you practice, the less a lisp you will have. You are 16 year old, so you should master this fast!!!! Practicing in a mirror is the most important part!!!!!
