What are some interesting genetic disorders/diseases?

  • I have been assigned an optional extra credit assignment by my science teacher. Our assignment is to make a poster on a genetic disorder/disease. Does anyone know of any good/interesting disorders I could do? If so, please post! Thanks! Bye!

  • Answer:

hemophilia Hemophilia (heem-o-FILL-ee-ah) is a rare, inherited bleeding disorder in which your blood doesn’t clot normally. If you have hemophilia, you may bleed for a longer time than others after an injury. You also may bleed internally, especially in your knees, ankles, and elbows. This bleeding can damage your organs or tissues and, sometimes, be fatal. People born with hemophilia have little to none of a protein needed for normal blood clotting. The protein is called a clotting factor. There are several types of clotting factors, and they work together with platelets to help the blood clot. Platelets are small pieces of blood cells that are formed in the bone marrow. They play a major role in blood clotting.

TTD - its Trichothiodystrophy. only about 100 cases in the world. My nephew is one of them. Includes premature birth, bad hair growth, dwarfism, mental and physical retardation (like that of cerebral palsy), eye cataracts, seizures, insomnia, and severe UV and food allergies (yes, he is allergic to the sun). the disease still has a lot of unknowns, but it is so rare because it is recessive. both parents carried the recessive gene, which is the only way the child can have the disorder. They have one healthy child also, but have a 50 percent chance of having another child with the same disorder.

Malignant melanoma. There are two genetic disorders that predispose a person to get malignant melanoma (the WORST sort of 'skin cancer') ... one is 'Familial nevous syndrome' and the other is found ONLY in people in my family ... so try doing your report on that ... talk to oncologists and dermatologists to see if you can find out what they call the kind that belongs to ONLY people in my family (it's a family name) ...
