Looking for some advice about brain cysts ?
-
Doctors found a cyst on my brain a few months ago. I went for another MRI 6 weeks ago to see if there was any change and got the results a few weeks ago. The Neurologist said that the cyst was in the middle of my brain and that i shouldn't worry too much. They said they would call me in for another appointment in a years time to keep an eye on it. So with that i was happy enough but still worried. Last week i got that appointment but it was for 6 months time and not the year that he had said. Then this morning i got a different appointment for a different hospital to see a consultant Neuro surgeon for November of 2012. Anyone know if this is normal procedure or do most brain cysts turn out to be nothing and why would i be sent to see a neuro surgeon ? I have called my GP but he won't be available until Wednesday. I am worrying myself sick. Thank you :)

Answer:
Sorry to hear that Abbie xxx If the specialists felt it necessary you would have been scheduled for immediate treatment. Since they are happy to delay, I think you can rest easy for the moment. I have no personal experience, but various web pages suggest you would be given anti-biotic and anti-fungal medication if the doctors thought you needed them Your GP will hopefully be able to explain the condition to you more clearly than the hospital has. Certainly worth booking a chat with him

Well Kate I'm sorry to rain on your parade, but here goes. First of all you did not tell us any of your neurological symptoms and there are many. As you were told not to worry it is possible that they are minor. However it is a fact that arachnoid cysts which are left untreated will eventually cause severe neurological damage. So your appointment with a neurosurgeon most likely is to program a procedure called the placement of a subdural shunt that drains the cyst's liquid into the subdural compartment. Before you get ballistic be advised that this is a minor procedure (2 or 3 days hospitalization) giving excellent results and quite common for patients with your condition.

From what I've been reading there are at least 5 different types of brain cysts, so if it was me I would try to find out either from your GP or surgeon exactly which type you have. They all seem to be of a harmless nature unless they become severely enlarged. If this was happening in your case, they would have had you back very quickly for treatment, so although it's hard, I wouldn't worry too much. See your GP as he should by now have the reports back from the Neurologist and can possibly put your mind at rest. The reason I think they are sending you all these appointments is to make sure the cyst hasn't become enlarged, and I really hope you get some satisfactory answers to your questions when you see your GP. I wish you all the best in this worrying time.

Wish I knew what to tell you Abbie, all I can say is you'll be in my thoughts and prayers, and if they say not to worry, then try not to [[[[[[[[[[[[[Abbie]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]

It sounds as if there is nothing they can do for it. I doubt they could operate. Just hang in there and follow the doctor's orders.

abbie, its only natural you are Worried, but they know what there doing, and know what is best, and as you say about a neuro surgeon, they do tend to deal with delicate ops,and if you think, if they thought it was so bad, would they make you wait that long,no they would not, you would be in Right away i know it is easy for people to say things, but think about what i have said, they would have you in there Right away,so abbie my good friend it is about waiting,i want it all to go Right for you,and it will you have become a good friend, and i want to here you back to your self again, apart from me there will be plenty on hear to support you,as i have said ,your one great Lady,so chin up my good Irish friend, were Right behind you, hugs for you xxx.

Sorry to hear you are worrying abbie my furry friend I agree with brian - if they thought you needed treatment and were at all concerned you would have been in to see that neurosurgeon within a week I know its not much consolation but it IS a good sign - its easy to say try not to worry but my advice is just that Save your worries for your GP appointment and you could always try ringing NHS Direct - I have spoken to them a couple of times about a health scare I had earlier this year and they were brilliant :0) ((((hugs)))))

abbie I am not a doctor but spend a lot of time there with my foot and all and the one thing i have learned is I like you over think and worry about things and if it was a emergency the doctors in vovled would of had you back a lot sooner then what has happened my best advice is to not worry and just wait and see it is very hard i know but it is one of those things where Only time will tell and you should not spend that time worrying that being said trust your doc and see how it plays out and feel free to email me you know i understand what you are going threw l Lov ya
