How to study for the Jeopardy teen test?

Where can a guy get an HPV test for HPV type(I know its possible because I was in a study at UW that did this)?

  • Where can a guy get an HPV test for HPV type? I know its possible, because I was in a volunteer study at University of Washington that did this. From what I remember, they used the same test they use on females (Digene), only they collect and analyze skin samples from the tip of the penis, shaft, and scrotum. Of course it's not a perfect collection method, but it was informative and seemed to prove that HPV does tend to regress or go dormant after a year or so. I would be fine with participating in another study or acquiring a test for home use that I can send to a lab. I found one HPV self test site (and its related sites) through search but they are not functional or being maintained. They say this is not an important thing to know for guys, but that's bull. The Gardasil vaccination protects females (and males in countries where its approved) against only 4 types of HPV. Knowing what types you have can be useful information for you and your significant other. Any help would be appreciated. Obviously the answer to this question probably lies in another volunteer study or some backdoor means!

You are right that this test is totally possible, but it's not offered a lot of places. So good luck finding one!! I've been trying to get it for a while, but my doctor (at Johns Hopkins!) doesn't offer it. And it's even MORE rare to find a place that will do this test on guys. And actually the Digene people have a test that is FDA approved for high risk strains only. It's either postive of negative and will not tell you the strain number. I believe they also make one for strain type, but I don't think they are the only ones.

I totally agree we need better HPV test for the male. I am not sure where you can find a doctor who will do the swabbing necessary for HPV test....at this time the FDA has not approved HPV test for the male....I would check with a dermatologist...I know I have seen where some have done the test. Moffett in Tampa, the Medical College of GA…UAB...and several other teaching hospitals have participated in studying and testing the male for HPV. Check the clinical trials websites...to see if they are any studies being done in your area. The Digene now Qigene test does not screen for specific HPV types...it only confirms if we have one or more of the 13 high risks HPV types the test screens for. A test by Roche/Amplicor can do specific HPV type test but again it has not received FDA approval. Another test was just approved for screening for HPV types 16 and 18....but I am not sure it is available to the market place at this time...I feel we need to screen for all high risk HPV types not just 16 and 18. Another test that you may be able to get from MD Lab here is the link. This may be the site you have already contacted. I have heard it is pricey. http://www.mdlab.com/html/testing/hpv_typedetect.html Because HPV does go into a sleeping state...it is important for us to do yearly testing....because the virus can become active years after initial infection. The vaccine needs to be given before we have sex..and Paps with HPV testing are still necessary. It is great to see that you were in a study....and great that you are proof...that the Digene/Qigeme is possible for the male...and is painless...and provides good information....we just need more info... I wish you well. In effect, HPV is able to mimic our own chromosomes, behaving as a sort of ‘mini-chromosome’, independently replicating and keeping pace as the cellular chromosomes replicate and the cell divides,” says Tom Broker, PhD, professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics and co-author of the paper. “This allows the virus to remain in our bodies indefinitely, with the potential of causing serious disease years, even decades, after first exposure.” http://www.health.uab.edu/4docs/19884/
