Can you tell if this scab is older than 4 days old?

I have a little cluster of "scab pimples" right below my ribs. I've never had anything like this?

  • I've had them for about 6 days now. They are mostly scabbed over and a little itchy. The surrounding area is sore, but not nearly as sore as it was in the past days. To describe them, they look and are shaped almost like the cells you see in biology class, with black "centers" . Some of them are a bit white around the black part (which I'm assuming is a scab.) Not pretty. So. Normally I'd just wait it out and just wonder what caused it, but I also have a little bump inside my armpit. (Now before you scream cancer, haha, I've had them before! Many times, they usually go away.) I remember noticing this quite a while ago, but it's been sore off and on the past few weeks. Also, about a month ago I a red circle scab they was unusually painful, on my head. It went away. Now... Is there anyone out there who can tell me something beyond Googling my complaints? Anyone with experience? I'm mostly curious, but I'd also like to know if there is something important.. I feel like the scabs are going away, but it seems a bit odd to me.... Thanks!

  • Answer:

It sounds like a severe case of ringworm or maybe shingles. The red sore on your head was almost surely ringworm. Ringworm generally doesn't turn black in the center nor does it hurt, which is what makes me think it might be shingles on your side.

If the scabby thing always comes in the same spot then recurrent herpes simplex seems most likely. It could cause a reactive lymph node to occur and that may also occur each time the herpes breaks out. Make an appointment with the doctor and keep it even if you don't have it then. Explain the history and then return for evaluation as soon as a new one breaks out. There is a test the dermatologist can do in the office to confirm the virus that causes herpes simplex. Or they can do a biopsy if needed to prove the diagnosis if not herpes.
