Can my severe toenail fungus be cured?

Question about toenail fungus?

  • I've had this fungus in my toenail for about 4-5 months now. I think that I knew something wasn't right with my toenail, but it took awhile for the fungus to develop so that I would notice. My toenail was yellow in color, then later turned brown. The fungus area has detached itself from the nail bed, so my toenail is loose in some parts. Now, my toenail is black at the edge, like a bruise. The bottom half of my nail looks normal. It looks like a new nail is forming behind the fungus nail and it's pushing the older nail along. I have been clipping my nail down and each time I clip it, it looks like the fungus is slowly going away. I would like to know, is the fungus slowly leaving my nail? Is a new nail forming at the nail bed and it's pushing my fungus nail out?

  • Answer:

If the nail truly looks healthy coming in, then I would say it is going away. To be on the safe side, you could treat it with oil of oregano or tea tree oil. Both work very well and have natural antibacterial properties - safe and no side effects. Just apply once a day.

Nail fungus rarely goes away on its own. What you may be seeing is a change in pigmentation of the fungus itself - it will almost certainly come back. Remember, fungus is a living organism and underneath the nail is warm, moist and perfect conditions for growth. You mention that the nail has become loose from the nail bed, which would suggest that the fungus has infected the bed itself and as such it needs to be treated. I would suggest trying a topical treatment at first (there are a few on the market, but i had good results with Zetaclear). Clip the nail down as far as you can, and then gently file the surface of the nail with a nail file. This serves 2 purposes; 1. Firstly it will make the nail thinner so the ointment can penetrate more easily, and 2 it increases the surface area of the nail (my making the surface slightly rougher) alowing more of the ointment to stick. You need to treat for at least 3-6 months. Persistency, patience, and cleanliness are the keys to success here :)
