How long does it take for a fever blister on your lip to heal & what's the best medication to use?

I accidentally used a friend's carmex lip balm and 2 days later a fever blister appeared on my lip. What is the duration time for a fever blister & what is the best medication to take? :-(

Answer:
From beginning to fully gone, it can be up to 2 weeks. For over the counter try Abreva and keep it moisturized so it doesn't crack. Then to be prepared for next time, ask your doctor for a prescription of Valtrex. Its the same stuff they use for genital herpes, but it works excellent for lip sores. But you have to use it right away when you start to feel the tingle. That's why you need to have it on hand. With Valtrex, the sore probably won't even show up at all when used promptly. Then don't share Carmex anymore ;-)

"Lipactin" is great for them. If you use it, it will heal within 4-5 days

a fever blister last about 2 weeks. I have never tried it, but they say that abreva is a good treatment.

I always just used vaseline, for myself and my kids..... And it's great for cuts, (small ones), and chapped lips, etc.. If you put it on the fever blister, right before bed, every night, you will see it disappear, before you know it, and just keep your hands off of it, dont pick it, even when its scabbing up, if its a bad one, that is.. Just keep applying that vaseline, throughout the whole healing process.....It's the most natural way of getting rid of "Owee's" and it doesn't have all of those chemicals , like alot of other things do.. Even chapstick, is good, but to apply chapstick, you'd have to put pressure, whereas: with vaseline, just use a cutip, or your pinky to carefully apply it.... Good-Luck, to you, oh and it should only take about a week to get rid of it... Oh, and "Here's wishing You & Yours A Wonderful , Happy , Healthy, Peaceful & Prosperous New Year, too!!" Smile!!!

Sounds like you were just exposed to the Herpes virus, aka Cold sores. It will probably take a week or so to heal. Yours best bet is to keep it moisturized to keep it from cracking when it begins to dry up. There are over the counter meds that seem to help. Now that you are prone to breakouts you will need to research and know the triggers. Try WebMD.com or something similar. There are a bunch of companies trying to make money off of cures and meds so don't be taken by their promises of healing it in 2 days.
