How long will my sunburn last and how can I treat it?
-
I am in Mexico on vacation. I fell asleep on the beach for a few hours without sun block on. Normally I don't burn at all. Now I have a very bad burn on my chest, legs, and forearms. It hurts to move and all day yesturday I stayed in bed. It has been two days and I don't feel like it has gotten any better. This morning I went outside in the sun for less than a minute and it felt like bugs were biting me really horribely.I have been putting on aquaphor ever day and globbing it on at night. I also tried aloe vera and that didn't seem to do any thing. Any advise? I don't want to spend my entire vacation laying in bed.

Well I get burned all the time and I understand what pain you must be in. First no matter what don't put Vaseline on it that will just make the burn worse. the first thing I do is I get a towel and put it in a bucket of ice water take it out and wrap it around the burned skin, this will help cool the skin, but don't put the ice on your skin ether. and yes lather on that Aloe Vera its soothing and will help heal the skin. cotton clothing is a must its light and breaths and just like what everyone is says stay out of the sun unless your skin is covered by clothing. But what you really need is time I know it sucks because your on vacation but time is the best thing. I'm not an expert just a pale person who lives in a beach town that gets burned a lot, and that's how I get rid of my burns!

Aloe vera is very good for sunburn- you say that it doesn't seem to be working but I reckon you should keep at it because it will probably be better in the long run. If your skin starts to crack try some moisturizer it will nourish the skin. Sun burn is actually a burn from the UV light of the sun so you should keep it covered up when you go out even though it may be very hot outside...

When I was just in mexico, I saw they sold stuff that I bought here. Its blue...called something ICE. It should be in your hotel, in the store, where the sunblock is. Its got a topical anesthetic in it, which will help with the pain. Also...bathing in milk helps it a lot. Keep it moisturized, over and over and over. And just try to ride it out hun

How to Treat a Sunburn Get out of the sun! Some people think once you're burned it can't get worse. It can and it does! If you couldn't feel it, your dead skin would start falling off! Use the succulent aloe vera plant. Cut it down the length of the leaf and open it, revealing the inner portion of it. Rub the clear gelatinous part, over the burned area. Repeat as often as you like. This is better than most aloe vera treatments that you can purchase, because it's clear and you know what's in it. Use very mild lotion before bed at night to help keep the skin moisturized. Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing that will not irritate the affected areas. Other materials, especially man-made ones like polyester, can rub harshly against the skin and make a burn feel much worse. If it is summer vacation and you are able to stay at home, do so, and wear as little clothing as possible to keep it from hurting your skin. Try putting a soft cotton blanket over the couch or bed to keep your skin from rubbing against upholstery. Use an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen to take the pain out of the burn and help with skin inflammation. Noxema facial cleanser, sold in blue tubs, is extremely effective at removing the heat and the sting from a bad sunburn. Rub as much as possible onto the burned skin. Do not wash off; allow to soak in. Reapply as often as possible. Also helps tan! Use a cool, damp cloth and rest it on the spots where you are burned; it will help keep you cool and reduce the burning feeling. Drink lots of water. When you have a sunburn, you get dehydrated easily. Bathe with cool water and avoid soap on the affected area, which can cause irritation. You can also try taking a bath with green tea. The tannin in the tea draws out some of the pain and can soothe the redness. [edit] Apricot MethodPeel and mash 3-4 apricots. Apply the mix on your face and leave on for 15 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water. Once the skin is red and irritated, you can be sure that the skin has suffered damage. There are no ways to cure sunburn, but you can apply some remedies as a sunburn relief or prevention of one. Take a long shower adjusting the water to almost cool temperature. Once you are done taking a shower, gently tap it to absorb the water, do not rub it as this will increase the irritation. [edit] Other Natural RemediesIf the burn is very recent (still red and not peeling), use a tomato. Tomato juice is acidic but it doesn't hurt and helps the redness. Apply a cold wet teabag to the afflicted area; put some warm water in a small bowl and put a teabag in it, then shake the teabag off and dab on. The moisture slowly evaporates off the skin cooling it, and the tea soothes the skin helps bring out the tan (wash the brown tincture off afterwards). Calendula ointment is also a very effective treatment, especially good for severe burns with blistering. You can find it at a naturopathic store. Apply witch hazel lotion, a good aloe alternative. Unless you have abrasions on the burned skin, try vinegar. Mix 50-50 with cool water, soak towels in the solution and drape over the burns. When you have a bath, add ½ a cup of baking soda or some oatmeal to it. This will help to reduce the swelling. Try aloe vera gel to soothe a sunburn. It may help ease the sting. You can also try petroleum jelly as this can help with sunburns too. [edit] Vinegar MethodUse a clean spray bottle and fill it up with ordinary every day vinegar. The smell almost totally vanishes from your skin after about an hour. Spread a towel on the floor/carpet and move any unnecessary objects you don't want sprayed out of the way. (For arm spraying try standing on the towel and lean over the sink). Spray the vinegar on your sunburned parts ONLY. Let it drip and dry. DO NOT RUB! If severely burned spray lightly again on sunburned area after a few minutes. You may pat vinegar after about 5 minutes if still dripping. Usually, the vinegar is dry by 5 minutes or less. After vinegar is dry, you can get dressed. Wear comfortable clothes which are not tight or covering sunburned area(s) if possible. The sunburn needs to be exposed to air and not covered. If you don't have a spray bottle, be careful and pour a little vinegar the cloth and pat it where sunburned. [edit] TipsDO NOT pick, poke, or peel your sunburn. This will cause even more irritation. By picking off the layer of sunburn, you're NOT going to uncover a tan, and you're NOT going to make the "peeling" process go faster. So let it heal itself! The first shower you take after getting the burn, rinse the area with warm, NOT HOT, water. This opens the pores and releases the trapped heat in your skin. Keep the area cool afterwards. It's a good idea to purchase a waterproof sunscreen and apply it liberally whether you think you'll be going in the water or not. This is to assure you're prepared for tho
