Can you pick the peeling skin from your sunburn?

Sunburn help - the new skin under the peeling stings?

  • I got a terrible sunburn last Wednesday, and my body just started peeling yesterday. I haven't had any blisters, and I've been applying coat after coat of aloe vera since this happened. The sunburn is the worst right on my left hip, where it's still somewhat red. Today while in the shower, I noticed that I was peeling a lot, so I took a washcloth and gently scrubbed at my skin. I did NOT pick at the peeling. Where it looked like the dead skin was ready to flake off, I rubbed, and a lot of it did come off. I also did this on my left hip, where the burn was worst. I got out of the shower and applied aloe vera gel, and I noticed that the spot on my left hip was stinging very badly (the aloe soothed it a little, but it still hurts). It looks bright red in a few places on my hip. It doesn't sting anywhere else; just where the burn was the worst. Is it normal for the new skin underneath the peeling to sting when it first emerges? The burn was fairly severe, especially in that spot. I'm terrified about the possibility of scarring, so I've been taking care of myself the best I can. Thanks so much!
