What is the best way to treat poison ivy, oak or sumac discomfort and rash?

    If it's bad enough, OTC stuff won't help much, but if you've just got a mild (if there IS such a thing! LOL ) case of it, Calamine, Benedryl lotion and gel, and Aveeno Oatmeal bath packets can all help ease the itch. You do know that it isn't catching? It's the oil that you touch that blisters you up, and you can spread that oil around before you even know you have touched it. The oil can last for up to 5 years on hoes, or gloves, or planters or trees, even after the plant is gone! And it only takes like 1/4 ounce to blister the entire population of the world!! Wash everything in hot water and dry with a hot dryer to be sure you break up all the oil anytime you think you may have gotten it on you. Good luck!!

A number of OTC medications are available. Calamine lotion is a classic, but a bit messy.

make a paste out of oatmeal and vinegar and smooth it over the blisters. It will dry them and help to soothe the itch.

A soapy shower. Then use calamine lotion. My sons was so bad we had to get antibotic cream too.

if you havent scratched it at all, then put bleach on it, let set a minute then wipe off.

Calamine tried but true. otc meds are available as well. I saw on Yahoo page a couple of days ago that poison ivy you can use white shoe polish. Never heard of that one before but its one of those remedies I guess.
