How's the best way to treat a cigarette burn?

Best way to treat open skin from a friction burn?

  • I got a friction burn on my ankle from a dog's nylon leash. It didn't hurt at first, but was excruciatingly painful about 5-10 minutes later. Now, about 3 days later, there's one part that has no skin on it. The nylon ripped it completely off. It is right in the crease of my ankle, so if I don't cover it, it hurts to bend my foot. I've tried one "Burn Plaster" (something we don't have in the US, but is a great thing!), which contains gel where a normal bandaid would have gauze. The gel is said to contain meds to aid in reconstructing nerve growth and keep the burn from scabbing, which they claim is a bad thing!? Now I"m totally confused and don't know if I should let this scab and heal on its own, or keep using the plasters. Any help, or guidance in the right direction would be great. Thanks!

  • Answer:

You don't want it to scab over. It will heal more quickly, with less opportunity for scarring if you keep it moist with the burn plaster, or an anti-biotic ointment and bandage. Change the dressing at least twice per day and any time it get wet. Regards!
