What should I do with my scaly sunburn skin?

What are some good remedies for a sunburn is very dark red and hurts when touched or the skin moves?

  • i have been applying aloe vera gel for a day, but have read elsewhere that this is not necessarily good for it. i know that lotion is needed, but i was also wondering about the baths, is water really bad for it like i have read in other places? should i use oatmeal baths or baking soda? and also vinegar, is it ok to apply two days after? if the skin is still quite hot to touch? any new suggestions are appreciated...

  • Answer:

Best bet is to keep yourself hydrated-drink TONS of water! Also, take cool (but short!) showers to keep yourself comfortable and apply lots of lotion (you can mix aloe into your lotion to have a more soothing affect). Be sure your lotion isn't fragranced or it will hurt! Taking an over the counter such as ibuprofen will help with swelling and pain. Also, you can buy Lidocaine to help numb the pain and cool the skin. Good luck, and remember the best remedy for sunburn is prophylaxis: Use Sunscreen!!

Try Dermoplast, you can buy it at Wal Mart...it's a soothing medicated spray that will help with the pain and help heal the skin.

I got a really bad sunburn once and my grandmother told me to separate the egg whites from some eggs and use a beater or a fork to beat them lightly. Aply it to the burn. It sounds weird I know, but it works like a charm. You'll be glad you gave it a try. I also keep a bottle of Panama Jack aloe vera gel with Lidocane. It works really good too!!

dude, go to the store and buy an actual aloe plant and extract the gel yourself trust me, I had a nasty infection that I thought I'd lose my foot to, then I applied aloe and the next day it was flat and red, like no scab I've ever seen, it was a smooth layer of dried blood, no infection! I agree with the guy below me, ibuprofen is great

there's several types of aloe vera gel. one is clear. aloe is clear in it's natural state. one is tinted -- sometimes green...sometimes blue.... usually it's the same as the clear one only it has dye added for the color... one is tinted or not with a numbing agent added. the numbing agent will help comfort level but my guess is that's the one you "shouldn't use all the time". Lots of lotion -- some aloe -- definitely good things for a sunburn.... Best thing of course is to use SPF 15 though for prevention. And remember, sunscreen goes bad over time so replace regularly....easily done if you use it regularly. If you only use it during summer, you should look to use new bottles every 1-2 years or so...don't use sunscreen that you dug out of a box you haven't opened in 9 years....it likely will not be the same as a new bottle and you could end up burned again. As far as baths are concerned, if your skin still feels hot, be careful of hot baths. Basically a sunburn is a mild degree burn....some burns are so bad as to land people in the hospital...I would say lukewarm bath to warm bath at best. Steer clear of the hot bath til' the sunburn subsides. Good luck...and for your skins' sake, lay on the sunscreen next time.

I've used cool compresses of equal parts milk and water. I don't have citing info, but I believe the pain-relieving qualities in calcium helped ease the pain. but nothing beats good old ibuprofin.
