How much does a chest X-Ray cost with no health insurance?
-
i've been experiencing pain in my chest, and i think i need a chest X-Ray. the only problem is, my insurance papers haven't gone through yet, and they won't for about a week or two. not only that, but i'm not sure that my insurance will cover a chest X-Ray (i have Medi-Cal). I used to smoke for about 4 months, and i quit back in February. The thing is, i smoked Hookah Yesterday, and ever since then, my chest hurts when i breathe deeply. now i'm scared that i have lung cancer, and i'm not willing to wait for two weeks to find out. so if ANYONE has ANY idea of how much it'll cost me to get a chest X-Ray at the emergency room, i'd REALLY appreciate it!!! THANKS!!!

Answer:
I work in a free standing imaging facility in Northern California. I believe we charge $200 for a routine chest x-ray, which is two views. I say believe because I don't do the billing, but I do the exam. I can tell you that the hospital in our same town charges nearly double what we do. So, call around your area to find the best price. If you are calling hospitals, make sure you get both of their charges. They charge a professional fee (for the radiologist's reading) and a technical fee (for the cost of the actual x-rays). But remember, in order to get a chest x-ray, you need a doctor's order. And there are many times that you won't actually need a chest x-ray. Medi-Cal does pay for chest x-rays, if there is a reason, such as chest pain.

Medicare's allowed rate is right at $31 for a chest x-ray. As a self-pay patient, however, most docs will charge you around $100 with a possibility of a cash discount (must ask!!!). Do not go to a hospital for this if you can at all help it. They will/could charge you in excess of $200. Medicare's allowed for the reading of the x-ray is ~$10.xx. If you get the x-ray while at the doc, however, you should not have to pay extra for this. I would suggest going to a doc who can do x-rays in-house and calling for prices BEFORE being seen. If you have insurance though, they should cover it as long as you have the symptoms for it (e.g., chest pain).

Please, I urge you, go tot he link below. It is for a very good medical discount plan. It doesn't matter what your health is or what your pre-existing conditions are. It goes through in a day. You get awesome discounts, it costs about $40 a month. Please, please do this and go to the ER.
