How easy is it to damage your vocal chords?

Can you damage your vocal chords if you've coughed for 2-3 whole weeks?

  • I had a bad cold for about 2 or 3 weeks and the only thing that's wrong now is that I'm still coughing from my throat feeling ticklish... about a week ago, when I'd lay in my bed trying to sleep, I'd breathe and my lungs would "gargle".. (sorry that's gross) but my question here is, do you think I damaged my vocal chords from coughing so long b/c now when I touch the front of my neck at a certain spot it's painful. I've also noticed that at the end of the day, my throat is VERY sore from talking I guess. Also, I've noticed that I cannot control my vocal chords as well I used to (singing-wise) so I'm thinking I might've overdone it with the coughing... I hope these problems aren't permanent!!
