Asthma is kinda bad but my peak flow reading is good?

I am worried about my peak flow should i ask my reg doctor next week if he can do a peak flow on me?

  • i saw my lung doctor in march and my peak flow then was in the 300's then. then when i saw the lung doctor in june my peak flow dropped down to 270 and the lung doctor didn't seem to care that my score was so low. and i am also not on anu asthma meds at this time. so my question is should i ask my regular doctor next week if he can do a peak flow reading on me?

  • Answer:

If you have asthma, you should at least be prescribed a rescue inhaler (albuterol)...If you have not been, make sure you get one at your next appointment. The rescue inhaler can be the difference between surviving a severe asthma attack and not. With regard to the drop in peak flow, has it been a consistent drop (meaning it has remained relatively low), or does it only happen on occasion? Occasional drops, in asthma patients, would tend to indicate an exacerbation, which should be treated with your rescue inhaler, depending on the severity of the decrease. At your next appointment, it would probably be a good idea to fill out an asthma action plan with your physician. This would establish a means of addressing changes in your peak flow readings in the future. See the link below for the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's template for asthma action plans.
