How can I get rid of a post-nasal drip??

  • Had it for 2 months now - driving me mad!

  • Answer:

if you haven't already tried a saline nasal spray and you aren't adverse to over-the-counter medications, give that a shot. I don't believe in OTC medications, (I prefer natural remedies), and whenever I get nasal drip, I snort a little bit of warm salt water, and it cures the problem every time. Just add 2 teaspoons of salt to a cup of warm water in a bowl. While standing over a sink, dip your nose in, and snort it gently, tilting your head back. It will enter your throat and mouth, but just lean over the sink and spit it out. Repeat this process until all the solution is gone, and do it every day until it goes away. The salt will dry out your mucus membrane, and the drip will stop. :) Hope this helps!

If it is not clearing after 2 months, it is more than just an Upper Respiratory Infection. The first thing I would do is try warm saline irrigation's of my sinuses. 1 teaspoon of Sea Salt in 1 quart of boiled water that has been allowed to cool to just warm. Use a new baby's bulb syringe to shoot the warm saline solution up each nostril until you have used the whole quart. It takes some getting used to, and do it over the bathroom sink with a shirt you don't mind getting wet. The warm saline will help to open the tiny openings that go into your frontal and maxillary sinuses so that they can drain completely. Congestion of these openings can retain sinus drainage that becomes chronic sinus drainage. The warm saline also promotes blood flow to the area to help heal chronic inflammation. If doing this daily for a week doesn't improve your condition, consider getting tested for allergies. Allergic rhinitis can cause chronic post-nasal drip. A thorough work-up would include a CT Scan of your sinuses to rule-out nasal and sinus polyps. A certified Ear, Nose and Throat doctor would be best. To find the best doctor, try going to the hospital where they practice and ask some of the nurses you meet in the halls, " If you had an ENT problem, who would you go to?" When the same name "pops-up" several times, write down that name and try to get an appointment! Good luck!

The best thing for it is Benadryl 25mg 1-2 tablets at BEDTIME. During the day, try to not medicate, as Benadryl is very sedating.
