What is causing my airy voice?
-
For about two weeks, I've noticed that my voice had become airy. It was especially noticeable, when I sang, and held a note. Shortly after the first signs of the airy-ness, my singing voice became very weak. I thought I was sick, but here I am, about two weeks later...and my voice is still airy. When I sing, my voice is not very strong, and I can hear the air escaping along with the sound. I also feel as if there is mucus in my throat, which would be causing the vocal cords not to be able to vibrate normally. After I sing a bit, I always feel like I want to get rid of the mucus, but after I do, or attempt to, my throat feels dry and scratchy. I'm not sure if I strained or injured my vocal cords, but I hope not... I am thinking that possibly, my sinuses have been draining into my throat. I've been crying a lot, especially at night, and I don't always get up to blow my nose. I sometimes go to bed with my nose stuffed up, and I'm thinking that may have something to do with the feeling of mucus in my throat. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am praying this will heal naturally, because singing is a large part of my life. I would hate to have permanently damaged my vocal cords. Thanks!

Answer:
I'm sorry but not being a singer I have no idea what you mean by "Airy".

I'd guess that your vocal folds are irritated from the crying and post-nasal drip. They may be slightly inflamed. A breathy voice indicates the folds are allowing more air to escape -as they would if they are inflamed and not making good contact during vibration. Let your voice rest for awhile until you are feeling better. You can cause damage much faster than you'd think...even just the once. Practicing good vocal hygiene is a part of singing. If the problem persists, talk to your doctor and he/she can refer you to a speech therapist who specializes in voice disorders.
