What is average life expectancy after diagnosis of COPD?

Life expectancy and copd?

  • I am 25 and have been diagnosed with copd. up until just recently i was as healthy as a horse. I just don't understand. I smoked but not everyday, just on weekends out with friends, but i have always had bad allergies. what is the real life expectancy for me being that I'm only 25.

  • Answer:

I can't remember what its caused but there is a type of COPD that is congential. You are predisposed to it from birth. With appropiate cre you should have a good life. You need to see a pumologist. Your Dr. will recommend one for you. You will need to have pulmonary function tests (where you breathe into a machine and they monitor the airflow and the oxygen contents) and be on appropiate medicine. See a pumologist as soon as possible. If you can go to a medical school for care, they are the most up to date. I drive 3 hours one way to see my pulmologist. Hes at the medical school.

That all depends on how advanced it is. Specialists will be the only ones who can provide you with any accurate estimates.

A board certified pulmonologist can give you the estimated longevity for your situation. However, they are often wrong. The real question is not duration of life with COPD - it's quality of life. Ask the experts who really know.

It is unusual to have copd at 25 but not unheard of. Anything that irritates th lungs and bronchial airways can damage them. This includes tobaacco smoke, pollution chemical fumes asbestos, If you have bad allergies it makes even more sense to stay away from things that are harmful. You should discuss the severity of your copd with your doctor - it may only be mild at the moment and if you are careful you can lead a long near normal life. Give up smoking, avoid smoky places, live away from city centres and highways which may be polluted. Dont use chemical sprays at home, or get someone else to spray when you are out. Avoid paint fumes. Tell your friends who smoke not to smoke near you and not to be complacent about themselves. Best of luck, stay well, live long and prosper.

3-5 years if you stop now.

If you always had bad allergies you were not as healthy as a horse. A lot depends on you, they claim the COPD folks live longer with 4 hours of execise per week

first id get a second opinion.. its highly unlikely unless were exposed to harsh chemicals etc or smoking more than cigarettes at 25.! maybe doc trying to scare you into quirt smoking, but lying to patients ...that's not ok. and if you do have copd esp at 25 !?! you need to find out why. or find out if its asthma or TB or allergies or some other condition.. good luck.
