Why can't I taste or smell at all after a cold?

PLEASE HELP! i cant smell or taste a thing :'( doctors or nurses answer if you can?

  • two weeks ago i had (i believe) laryngitus, i lost my voice and only had some occasional pain in my throat, after regaining my voice (after about 5 days of symptoms), the infection seemed to move down to my chest, where i began coughing and coughing up phelgm, for the past week my nose has been running constantly with green mucus and again coughing up phelgm, ive not been feeling well at all, and having sudden bouts of fever.. the most worrying aspect of this period of sickness, is on monday i began losing my sense of smell and taste.. it is now 3DAYS on! and i havent regained my sense of smell or taste, i get the odd occasional whiff of something, (think ive managed to smell two things) i havent produced as much phelgm or snot in the past 2 days.. not only have i been ill for two weeks, im starting to feel depressed because i cant enjoy food or smells.. its pointless going to the doctors theyll jst tell me to go home and stay in bed, and i cant afford to take days off work..

  • Answer:

its probably just a temporary side effect of your illness, but instead of talking about it on here, go and see your GP!!!

Yes, you will get your smell/taste back. That's just part of having a cold. Actually, your sense of taste is interrelated to smell, even though we don't realize it... which is why when your nose is stuffed up, you can't really taste food. Give it a few weeks to let your body get over the cold, and your taste/smell will be as good as new. Hope this helps!

Here is a clue, if anything green comes from your body, you most likely have an infection. Green needs immediate attention, like now. Please get to your physician before you end up down for a loooong time.

Irish_beauty, The anosmia, or absence of the sense of smell coupled with dysgeusia, which means distortion or absence of the sense of taste, often happens after or with the viral infection - laryngitis. You will regain both senses, but you should try not to speak with your voice until your throat is no longer sore. If you try to communicate in a whisper, doing this does not use your vocal cords and will not put any strain on them. There are many ways to relieve the symptoms and you will find some in the link which I add. The information provided here should not be used during any medical emergency or for the diagnosis or treatment of any medical condition. I don't know how old you are but my father lost his smell and taste about three years ago for no apparent reason. Doctors cannot find anything wrong with him so they have put it down to being stress related.

My main question is whether or not you took drugs, such as antibiotics, for your illness. Some drugs can effect your sense of smell and taste. My feeling is that you will get it back fine. It may take a few days, and if you took antibiotics, maybe longer. Some drugs (prescription) cause permanent loss or change to your taste sensations. Read carefully the side effects before taking any drug your doctor recommends. Remember, "side effects" are still EFFECTS. You can still smell a little, and your sinuses are clogged still, and if you can't smell, you can't taste much either. That's why holding your nose to drink or eat something you don't like the taste of works. You will be fine.

stay home and rest, if you dont one day your body might just turn off itself thus makingg you faint possibly coma. you will probobly get your senses back.. x
