In an apparently fit man age 42yrs. Non smoker, active, no recent severe infections. Could the condition have been there undetected for some time or is it more likely to have recently developed ?. Presently on warfarin but cause not known.

Answer:
A blood clot in the lung is usually known as pulmonary embolism, caused by a sudden blockage in the lung artery. Usual causes of this are certain types of surgery, it may be caused by long trips in a car or an airplane, or it may also be a result of staying in bed for an extended period of time. I'm not in the medical system, but I know there aren't always answers for everything. I had multiple DVT's (blood clots in the deep veins) in my left leg simply because of a hormone imbalance when I was 16. I know that my doctor sent my blood off to be tested thoroughly. Maybe you could request better testing or ask your doctor? I'm sure he'd have better answers...

I'm no medic, but have experience in this very subject. My sister has a very rare condition called Factor 5 laden. Its an aspect of blood, which has control of the INR (thickness/viscosity) of blood. In layman's terms, she has blood schizophrenia. One week, her blood will be normal. Then the next, it will drastically thicken, causing a blood clot, normally in her lungs. She is only 29, but has 15 blood clots so far. She has had an IVC filter fitted. Basically it is a sieve in the blood that catches the clots as they pass, and the warfarin in her system gradually dissolves the clot. I'm sure you don't have this condition, apparently, only 1-in-10million have it. Sorry, no real solution, just some insights. Ant

The commonest cause of lung emboli is DVT, legs clots firing off pieces of clot into the circulation which end up in the lungs. More rarely these clots fly off from the pelvis, arms, or heart.

YES they could have been there a long time.it would effect the breathing.A doctor might take it as infmosema.or bronsites.if the valves aren't working properly in the heart,it could cause the problems in the lungs.

Dunno bout specific blood clot in lungs, but a clot could arise in the lung as a piece broken off from another part of the body (i.e. an embolus)
