What can I do for a scratchy throat and dry cough?

What to use to soothe a sore throat caused by dry cough?

  • I have had a dry cough for the past two days and now my throat feels raw. I still have the cough but mostly only when I lay down at night. It sounds horrible and I know it's tearing my throat up. Anyone know of home remedies or something I can buy from the drug store?

  • Answer:

Warm salt water gargles hot water with lemon And stick liquid maalox back there and hold it in your throat either swallow or spit it out. Do this around the clock. Sleep elevated - and lots of fluids and soup (chicken noodle)

Try drinking a "Hot Toddy" It's tea with Brandy and lemon. Once you've had a few of them, your throat won't bother you anymore and even if it does...you really won't care...that's what the Brandy is for. ;O)

I have a great one for this!!!! GUM...you know the kind of gum with the super strong mint flavor that doesn't die...that works awesome and no medication in it so you don't over do it!!! Eclipse, Dentine Ice, Extra...etc...

I know this will seem silly but take it for what it's worth. I've had a cold for the past seven days. It left me with a terrible dry cough that kept me up all last night. I've only got a few cat naps today and then the coughing starts. I was looking around the net for something other than over the counter medicines. I've been using Buckley's cough syrup and it doesn't work this time. You know that horrible tasting stuff. The tickle in my throat is terrible. I'm very sore from all the coughing and feel miserable. I found this : For quick relief of a deep cough that will last for at least 4 hours apply Vick's Vaporub to the bottoms of both feet and then put white socks on to keep the ointment from rubbing off. The relief will come in minutes and last a few hours. Works great to help children stop coughing so they can sleep at night. It even works well for adults. I know it sounds too easy, but try it ... it works! Guess what? It worked and the tickle is gone for the past hour. I've only coughed once since putting the Vicks on my feet and rubbed some on my chest to inhale. Maybe I'll get some sleep tonight!

Water is your first best bet. Gargle with sea salt dissolved in water, and drink plenty of pure clean water. It sounds possible that you have allergies, but if the cough sounds that bad it is possible you are getting sick. And I get that kind of cough when my asthma is not under control. Dry coughs can be problematic and if it's keeping you awake it is very worth seeing a doctor. Asthma can be life threatening, so you need medical input if you have that. (I was diagnosed when I was 38, so it's not just for kids!) My favorite cough drop is Ricola Original flavor. Very soothing.
