Asthma is kinda bad but my peak flow reading is good?

Does blue asthma inhaler improve peak flow test?

  • docs told me my 3 year had asthma and gave her blue inhaler ..after using it for4 weeks she had first peak flow test ..was then told only give her when needed ..that was 8 weeks ago and she seems to be getting worse...could it have given false reading..? please help worried mother

  • Answer:

A 3 year old is too young to do a peak flow and to use a regular inhaler properly. There are various devices (spacers) which can be used with an inhaler to improve the performance but this is likely to be the reason the inhalor is not working. Its also possible its not asthma. 3 year olds are good at inhaling peanuts and various bits of plastic. She probably needs to be seen by a specialist.

The blue inhaler is a 'reliever' and will only provide temporary relief when someone is suffering asthma symptoms. It will not reduce the symptoms of the asthma longterm. If the doctor has diagnosed your 3 year old with asthma, then he should have prescribed a beclamethozone inhaler known as a 'preventer' and which is an inhaled steroid (not to be confused with the oral steroids which can have undesirable affects when taken long term). These are usually brown or beige, but can sometimes be dark red in colour, though I think the red ones are for the more severe cases of asthma. It is quite common for youngsters to grow out of asthma symptoms as they get older but if your little one is getting worse, I would certainly go back to the GP. The blue inhaler will open up the airwaves which will help you little one to breathe, but the steroid inhaler, which is usually taken daily, should calm the lungs down over time. Hope things improve soon.

The blue inhaler you are referring to is called 'Sabutamol' and the peak flow meter identifies the strength of wind you puff. The way that the gadget is made cannot provide a false reading unless the child is not blowing the maximum lung capacity of wind hard enough to provide a correct accurate reading.

The blue inhaler is a rescue inhaler which means that it is to be used only when having an asthma attack. It is a quick acting bronchiodiolater. It will quickly open your daughters airways so that she can breath easier. It will not improve her over all breathing, so the peak flow meter is correct. I have added a link for the Asthma Association. Please learn all that you can about this illness so that you will better understand how to help your daughter.

blue inhaler should only be used when needed and the brown one is the one you take everyday as a preventer. your doctor should have given you a peak flow diary complete and then decide what to do after that and if he has asthma she should have brown and blue inhalers.

Yes, the blue inhaler is the reliever, brown is steroids to help increase lung capacity. You need to return to your GP, or call NHS Direct for advice if you are concerned about your three year olds breathing.

It might of been a false reading. With the peak flow meters you have to be sure that the nose is obstructed, and then she exhales hard enough.
