How do you know that you are sick from mold? any symptoms to look for?

  • seen mold in a hotel and wondering how it makes people ill

  • Answer:

What are Symptoms of mold exposure? There are many symptoms of mold exposure. The extent of symptoms depends on the sensitivity of the exposed person. Allergic reactions are the most common and typically include: respiratory problems such as wheezing and difficulty breathing; nasal and sinus congestion; burning, watery, reddened eyes or blurry vision; sore throat; dry cough; nose and throat irritation; shortness of breath; and skin irritation. Other less common effects are: nervous system problems (headaches, memory loss, moodiness); aches and pains; and fever. If you have any of these symptoms, and they are reduced or completely gone when you leave the suspect area, chances are you have been exposed to some sort of allergen, quite possibly mold.

Is your building sick? The Stachybotrys mold, shown in a magnified view, can cause sick-building syndrome. What is Sick Building Syndrome? Sick building syndrome is the result of an indoor air contamination problem. What are the symptoms of SBS? The usual symptoms include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and fatigue. The symptoms usually dissipate once occupants have left an infected building. What causes SBS? Some microorganisms negatively affect the body. To date, research has shown two fungi, Penicillium and Stachybotrys, have been linked to this syndrome. These fungi usually grow and cause air problems when building materials, such as walls and carpets, become wet. Combined with a dirty environment, the fungi grow. What can I do to prevent SBS from occurring? Check your home to ensure that there are no broken water pipes or roof leaks that could lead to substantial mold growth. Make sure your home is weather-proofed as much as possible to reduce humidity inside the house. And dust your house and change your air filters regularly. What can I do if I think my home has SBS? Contact a local air quality business to see if (it) can determine whether your home is having problems. If you are suffering respiratory problems, then contact your local physician or health care professional for additional information.

Mold can make you react much the same way as allergies. I've had this before and I was sicker than a dog. Runny nose, headaches, coughing, sneezing, lousy breathing, etc.... Mold I think makes you ill if you are continually in this environment. A one night stay might only make you mildly ill that is unless your allergy is off the charts.
