How do you get rid of hiccups?

How do you get rid of severe hiccups?

  • My grandpa has cancer and is slowly fading. He has had the hiccups for the last four days. Is there anyway to help him get rid of these pesty hiccups. We can't do any breathing excercises because his cancer is in the lungs and is staggard. Does honey work...what else can i do? Thanks and God Bless!

  • Answer:

Excessive eating, alcohol, excitement or stress can over-stimulate the phrenic nerves – which control the diaphragm. The diaphragm then contracts involuntarily. Then at the same time, the glottis – the part of the larynx where the vocal chords are located – closes up. And according to gastro-enterologist Patricia Raymond, this results in the spasms and the odd “hic” sound that repeats every few seconds. A typical case of hiccups only lasts a few minutes, but some can go on and on. And while there’s no cure, holding your breath or breathing into a paper bag can help. It “resets” your phrenic nerves – kind of like rebooting a computer.

Dear God, with all that is going on for this poor man, I can't believe he has to deal with the annoyance of hiccups on top of it. What you can do, if you are willing to take a bit of a strange path to freeing him of the hiccups. Is as follows. 1. Get a Bucket of warm water 2. A couple of towels 3. A four iron or lower, you'll need the length in shaft. So not a putter. First bring the bucket of water and the towels to the far corner of the room. Next, ask him to close his eyes. After he closes his eyes, smash him in the face with the 4 iron repeatedly. The hiccups should stop right after his breathing does. Take the water and clean up the mess with the towels.

I am sorry that you have to deal with this kind of thing. And I don't mean just the hiccups. I wish you both strength and blessings. 3 things that works for me when I have a bad case of hiccups. I know it is not the same, but it's the best I can offer: 1. Heat. Not burning, and not just keeping warm. Like a bottle of heated water under my shirt 2. Being forced to keep my focus and attention on something else. It does not always go away when ignored, but lessen in power. 3. Chocolate. I do not chew it, but suck it as if it was hard candy. But might be a bad idea, if there is a risk of swallowing it. Honey, as you mentioned might have a similar effect too, but I don't know anything about that.
