When cars have that ORANGE tape around the windows what does that mean?

What does this reading mean for a mold test?

  • Today a mold expert came to the house I'm renting and tested the areas around the windows. He had a device he was using and spoke the reading into his tape recorder. The reading in my main room he said was 60%. What does this number mean? Is it a 60% chance there is or is not mold? Although they are storm windows, I've had problems with water building up inside the windows and leaking onto the carpet, which has damaged my stuff and sometimes saturated the carpet and padding. I'm not big on complaining or being a trouble to anyone and my landlord is usually very fair and honest. The problem is, over 6 months or so, I've developed a cough and get frequent headaches. I'm hoping there is no mold, but the guy who did the testing said there are "issues" in the house, but would not explain what the readings indicated. The expert sprayed some anti mold liquid around the windows and on the edges of the carpet, before leaving.

  • Answer:

According to all the reliable text and experts including but not limited to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning Restoration Certification, EPA Mold Removal Guidelines for Schools and Commercial Buildings, mold can become a problem when humidity goes above 60% to 65% RH. RH = Relative Humidity. It seems as this is one of the tests the Mold Technician completed. Please note that 60% RH is not optimal but may be just barely adequate humidity levels to support a small amount of the most drought tolerant molds. The higher the humidity, the more mold growth will occur. It sounds as though the water building up inside the windows and leaking onto the carpet have created a minor mold problem.
