How can you tell the difference between allergies and a cold?

How can you tell the difference between a head cold and allergies/hayfever?

  • They seem to have very similar symptons and I don't know what kind of medication to try, Also my temp is up and down can allergies cause this,or is it more likely to be a cold I've had these symptons for about two weeks

  • Answer:

A cold should start to get better within a week and be gone by a week. When symptoms last longer it's time to see your physician as it could be a sinus infection as indicated by the temperature fluctuations or really allergies. Both of these require prescription strength medications. Remember that when you go to see the doctor to take a list or your meds including over the counter and vitamins. Also, write down everything you can remember about when the symptoms started, the severity and how long its lasted and take that with. Hope you feel better soon.

Usually the body temperature is a give away. Colds cause a fluctuation in body temperature, allergies don't. Good Luck!

If you have an infection then your temperature would be raised. To my knowledge allergies don't raise the temp.

In allergies there are usually nasal and eye discharge, sneeze, some irritation in your pharynx, etc.One kind of cold is with allergies esp in spring. But anyway, this condition lasting for two weeks needs to be examined.
