Is using an expired inhaler bad for you?

We are moving and my asthma is bothering me..no insurance and inhaler exp. in 2004...any advice???

  • My hubby and I are moving in 2 weeks...just 2 days into packing and I'm already wheezy and my chin and throat are itching like crazy. I've got an old expired combivent inhaler, but not really much of anything else. We're flat broke, using just about every penny to help us move and I'm not insured. (Sounds like a recipe for disaster, I know...) Any ideas you might have to help from home remidies to things you think might work would be appreciated...I can't very well just sit outside and let him pack up the whole apartment...

Here is a really simple way to help elevate some of your Asthma symptoms... Every time you start experiencing symptoms pretend you have a straw in your mouth when you exhale. Purse you lips and focus on breathing out. Trying to stay calm is a good idea too (even though I know it can be hard). Because of how asthma effects your airway (excess mucous production and constricted bronchioles) it makes it difficult to exhale. Breathing out is caused by the relaxation of your "breathing muscles" so its a passive process. Thats why its hard to breath out. Hope this helps! It totally sucks to be broke...

If you can you should try some primatine mist. i was in a similar situation as you and it is failry cheeper then albuteral. You don't even need a prescription for it either..pretty much any store will have it.. Also, This sounds really dumb but if you feel an attack coming on put your head in the freezer and breath the cold air for a few mins..That works for me really well.. If your not near a freezer. sit down and put your head between your legs. It will force the air into the right area of your lungs. That also works really well. I hope you do okay..good luck on ur move!!

Sounds like allergies are causing the problem. Get Benadryl (?) or over the counter Claritin. This will help with the allergies and hopefully calm down the wheezing. If not, call a doctor, explain the situation and see if he/her will see you at minimal cost and give you inhaler samples.

2004? You must have been doing well all this time. I know you realize that the stress of moving is flaring you up. Inhalers are not expensive if you get generic brand. My son's was $20.00.Call the last doctor that prescribed your inhaler,be honest and tell them your situation and they may give you a free sample. They always have these. In the meantime, coffee is a bronchodialator.

Asthma is a very, very, very serious condition and can go bad in an instant. You really need to be on some preventative therapy and need to see a physician regularly so you get better control. Take it easy with the physical stress and strain you could be headed for a hospital stay. Get yourself the insurance to take better care of yourself. I do understand your dilemma. Try a vaporizer tonight in your existing bedroom and get a rescue inhaler, ASAP.

Get an over the counter inhaler or allergy meds. If you have allergies, Benadryl is great and the same as any perscription you can get! If your really that broke, .... Go to the emergency room and tell them your having a heard time breathing. Tell them your past history that you can't refill your meds. (Leave out the part about moving)

Do a little bit of meditation or what ever you prefer and relax, try to keep yourself in a calm state and no stress if possible, take controlled breaths(breath in and hold for a few seconds and then let out) that will help your lungs get the oxygen that they need. Remember to be calm and move with precision, and do not freak out or you will make it worse. I hope that helps :-]

call your doctor and tell him you need a prescription wrote for albuterol (cost $4.00 at Wal Mart or HEB) or go to the pharmacy and buy a primatine mist inhaler for about $7.00 Also since the packing seems to be the problem try putting on a breather mask or a bandana after taking some benadryl or claratin

Old wives cure: breathe normally in and out of a paper bag. Sometimes works. Learn the Buteyko method - always works. Unfortunately it works best with expert instruction, which is expensive, though there are some places(not many, hard to find) on the net that will give you step by step instructions.
