What is average life expectancy after diagnosis of COPD?

My mom has copd and she still smoke what will her life expectancy be?

  • my mom has copd (chronic obstructive pulminary disease) i have researched all of this and it keeps on telling me that they aint shore my mum has a quater of her lung taken over by this disease and i was told it would be about ten years maximum but the downsider is she still smokes how will this affect her life expectancy and could you give me a range or is their anyone that is suffering with the desease if so it would be great for all your information as the doctors havn;t told us anything only that syhe needs steroids.

    My god you have asked the question that i was going to ask earlier, my mam also has copd and she totally distroyed her lungs she is in hospital again as i speek has just come out of itu today been on the venilators etc, it was march last year when it first came to light., so i really do know how you feel, your right the drs dont tell you much its through the internet you will find most of the information, unfortunatly our parents dont see what we are going through with them still smoking try to support her if you smoke yourself you also give up (i did) tell her that you are wanting her to stick around for a long time, again unfortunatly with my mam it took something like this again for her to see how serious cotinueing smoking can effect her lungs, there really isnt a time limit its all up to her now.my mam is taking loads of medication, and yes steriods inhalors and the drs are talking about oxygen now i wish you my best and hope things work out for you.

my husband died recently due to this he battled for 11years and no we couldnt get him to give up the ciggies.the docs cant give you a time limit cos everyone diffrent,we found banning any one with a cold cough ect helped keep him out of hospital,for the last 5 years he was housebound on oxygen 24/7 nebs every 4 hours steroids daily

Every cigarette she smokes will reduce her life expectancy by 2 minutes, she really needs to stop otherwise she will suffer very badly in the naer future;

To be honest who really knows? My nan died of lung cancer and never smoked in her life. My friends gran has smoked 60 a day since she was 14 (shes now 87) and is healthier than me! Smoking clearly isn't good for you though, and you should try and encourage her to give up as with COPD she will not be helping herself at all!

As you rightly say it`s chronic it won`t improve but the rate of progress is greatly decreased if she can stop smoking,there is a new drug availiable,varenicline,(trade name champix) it`s well worth a go,it eliminates the desire for nicotine and makes the fags taste repulsive.(UK on prescription)

I feel really sorry for you its must be very hard watching her making herself worse I think she needs some kind of shock treatment Maybe she needs to see how she`s going to end up if she doesn`t stop now Does she get the ciggies herself because if she`s not well enough to get them Then maybe stop anyone getting them for her I haven`t been much help but there`s not a lot you can do unless she wants to help herself

get her cigarettans and rip them to shreds and refuse to let anyone in the family go and buy any for her. If you see one in her hand take it off her and flush it down the loo.

I have copd and still smoke even though I know It will kill me . I have tried numerous times to quit and keep failing but I keep trying. I have found a support group helps. Give your mom all the help and support she needs but don't nag it never helps
