Why Did People Start Smoking Tobacco In The Past?

Is there a good reason why well informed and highly educated people continue smoking tobacco?

  • I can accept that people who don't know anything about the letal consequences of smoking tobacco continue doing so, even today in the information era. But those who have access to updated information know that smoking is harmful both to themselves and other people around them. Why are they doing it?

  • Answer:

Do you drink alcohol, eat fast food or breathe in car exhaust? If any, you are no different than them. All of those are just as bad as smoking. Maybe you like to drink and eat more. Therefore it's justifiable. But in reality it's not. It's time for you to get a clue.

Presumably you have never smoked and don't know just how incredibly powerful the addiction is.

Addiction is blind to IQ. If it were just about being rational then nobody would smoke. Try readind allan carr's book on quoting smoking. I find it has pretty good insight into the mind of a nicotine addict.

No smoker "plans" to become addicted. It just happens. Nicotine addiction is extremely strong. It doesn't matter how educated you are, it is very hard to quit.

I answered your other question first then came to this one. I do not find any one of the answers that was really bad.The answer to your question is that smoking is addictive and additions are hard to break . Quitting smoking has been compared to withdrawing from heroin. It does not mean that people who smoke are "weak, stupid, hateful or anything else. It means that they have a problem. More Americans are suffering from some sort of addiction than not. From baseball to heroin people have problems and are either working them out or not. Any addiction is harmful. Peoples lives get ruined.Prayer and understanding or perhaps volunteering your time to help is a solution because criticism and ranting has never I repeat never been a solution.

see theres one person that quit and hasnt gone back. it just shows that some people are weak willed. others can do what they try to do (or not do)...

There is a gambler's streak in all of us, educated or not. and they are prepared to take a chance. In fact, a highly educated colleague told me "By the time I get cancer, they will have found a cure for the disease". When all is said and done, I think the wisest thing I have done in my life was to quit smoking on the 29th June, 1983. I haven't touched a cigarette since then.. But I know how tough it was, especially since I quit cold turkey. So I sympathize with those who are trying so hard to quit.

Partly because for many it's nice enough to be worth the risk, but mostly because nicotine is the most addictive drug known -- they don't really have a choice.
