Really SHARP PAIN in my back?

Sudden, Sharp Chest & Back Pain...? What is it?

  • Ok, earlier today i woke up and felt fine. I got in my car and started to drive and then really suddenly i felt very weird. It was like i was almost going to faint. My arms felt so heavy and weak and my body also felt the same. I stopped the car and got out to get some fresh air and i started to feel fine. When i got to where i was going, i parked the car and started walking and then felt absolutely fine again. I had an appointment so i went there and i felt fine all the way through the appointment. Then when i got back into my car and started to drive home, i had a bit of chest pain. Not serious pain but just lasted for a minute or so. Then about an hour later i gave someone a lift somewhere and all of a sudden i had the worst chest and back pain ever. It was as if i had swallowed something huge, like a sharp brick. You know that feeling when you swallow something you havent chewed up enough, and it hurts as it goes down. Sharp and very painful. It was like that but 10 times worse. It was all over my back, my chest and up my neck and i could feel it around my jaw. This lasted about 1 minute until i moved my position and kind of twisted my body a little bit to try and ease the pain. It was as if i was digesting something very big and very sharp. I hadnt eaten anything at all so it couldnt have been indigestion or anything like that. It was extremely painful! Then when i got home i felt ok. I had something to eat and to drink and i felt a bit of pain like before but no where near as painful. Just uncompfortable. I feel ok now. I dont feel ill at the moment, just a bit worried. Cant find anything on the internet. Does anyone know what it could be? Im 19, male by the way and 2 days a go i went into hospital to have an operation (circumcision) but i doubt that has anything to do with it. It was all very quick, i went in in the morning and out by the afternoon. I do have mild asthma as well, and i smoke (yes i know, its bad, im aware of everything etc.) But it didnt feel like it was a breathing problem. I wasnt short of breath and i could breathe fine. Just a lot of pain around my chest and back area. Has anyone ever had anything similar?

  • Answer:

I am also a smoker and have had these same exact pains for 2 yrs. Mine start in my back and chest and the side of my neck and jaw. The pain is something I can not explain, I have never experienced anything as painful and I have given birth twice. I have had stress tests, blood work, xrays, cat scan and the last time was a scope down my throat. All test were perfect. The dr that did the scope said that he thinks it is esophogus (sp?) spasms, which can cause severe pain. He gave me nitro pills that heart patients take but they are also perscribed for this as well. I have read alot about these spasms and they do sound very similar to what I am experiencing. I do think that when I drink alot of coffee that they happen more often. What is wierd is that mine only usually happen in the morning while I am waking up (sometimes it wakes me) and other times it is shortly after I wake up. I only drink two cups of coffee in the morning instead of all day like I used to and it has seemed to help. When I do get one, I put a nitro under my tongue and it seems to take about a minute to go away otherwise it will last about 4 mins. I use to have one or two every day and now it seems I have about one or two a month. I hope this helps, it seems like something should be seriously wrong with the pain that it causes but I have checked out okay except for this diagnosis of the spasms.Check the symtoms out online, they seemed to be pretty much the same. I liked the way you explained it by saying you felt like you swallowed a sharp brick, that pretty much summed it up! Good Luck :)

You need to go to vist your doctor and tell him about this. Chest pain like that isn't good esspecially when you compare it to your other symptoms. Do you notice any signs of infection on your circumcision wound? Smoking can cause serious heart problems. -Connor
