What is cystic fibrosis?

What is the average life expectancy for people with Cystic Fibrosis?

  • I'm pregnant with my first baby and I got some tests done and the doctors informed me that my daughter will have Cystic Fibrosis. My mother had a brother and sister who died from the disease when they were quite young. So I'm kind of worried about things my daughter would have to experience with in her life and how to deal with them. Anyway, I'm wondering what is the current life expectancy for children/people with Cystic Fibrosis and how can you best take care of them to maximize their life?

  • Answer:

the average life expectancy for someone with CF is around 34.7 to 35 years that is an average doesn't mean that is as long as someone with CF will live. They are making advances in meds and other treatments evey day. speaking as one that has lived with CF Don't worry about how long she will live worry about what you can do with the time you have with her, I had a bilateral lung transplant at 27due to end stage CF i'm sure my parents worried about me asi was growing up, but what parent doesn't worry about their childern? I will be turning 41 in just about a month, and will celebrate my 14th year post transplant in May.Let your daughter be a kid try to treat her just like a normal child, Yes you will have to get comfortable with doctors visits and meds, but if she gets started with treatments early then her chances of living a Long, healthy, and normal as she can have life. Here is a web site that might be able to help you out with your questions. http://www.cff.org/

I have seen CF patients live to be 37 years old. Do everything the doctor says. Have a Respiratory Therpist help teach you postural drainage and cupping. There are going to be treatments involved and a lot of attention given to him/her. God bless you and help you through this.

I had two nieces who had cystic fibrosis. Now I have one. Soon I may have none. They lived into their early 30s when the youngest one died after her second lung transplant a couple of years ago. Now a doctor has stupidly said the surviving one, the oldest, may have 6 months to live. She has had one lung transplant and does not want to go through another. Usually cystic fibrosis kids don't make it out of their 20s and spend a lot of time shuttling back and forth in and out of the hospital their entire lives. You have to be a real hero to endure this.
