How does someone quit smoking?

How do I tell someone you love it's time to quit smoking? Really serious?

  • My mom has been smoking for a little bit over 20 years and she also is a heavy drinker. How can I tell her that I'm very concerned when she doesn't listen and says she fine all the time. And tells me when she does die will we cry at her funeral. She also has physically changed she has lost a tremendous amount of weight and she says it from stress. But I heard that those are one of the signs of cancer . Please need advice Thank You

Honey, I hate to tell you, but you can't make her quit. When people are addicted to stuff, they have to want to quit. I know it sucks, but the best thing to do maybe is write her a note telling her how you feel, that way she can't make you feel bad if you tell her face to face. And maybe you should talk to another adult in your family that your close too. Maybe they can talk her into going to the doctor for a check up. Good luck though honey, I know this is difficult for you. And I smoked for ten years knowing fully well what it does to your lungs and things like that. So simply pointing out the facts is useless on someone who is already addicted. So I doubt that would do much good. But you might be able to hit an emotional chord with the I love you's and I want you to be here for your grandkids kinda things.

You can't change someone. They have to change themselves.

ok so today i had a guess speaker at my school today, it was very sad because she was 77 and started smoking at 13, she lost her voice, had touble breathing and and had a tube in her neck, she also met a guy that died of smoch and throat cancer for smoking and chewing tabaco... first try developing a stronger relationship between you and your mother, and don't go directly to the topic. spend time together with your mom and your family, after some time tell her how much you and you family need her and ask her to stop smoking for you. also try doing some research, such as that they spray rat poison on tabaco when the leaf is drying. it is not easy, but its not impossible either there are some patches to help stop addiction, introduce these to your mom and talk it over. you might also want to reduce her stress by helping her with anything. listen carefully for any changes in her voice and if youy hear changes ask her to visit a doctor. wish you the best of luck...:)

tell her you love her and it would truly hurt if your time with her was cut short because of a silly habit.

Does she keep regular doctor appointments? Well considering what you've mentioned I'm assuming not. Maybe you could call her doctor and schedule an appointment. Have him/her talk to your mom about her habits and maybe or some tests. Schedule it and maybe say you're taking her out somewhere. And if she seems like the kind to flip out and refuse to go in or leave, blindfold her until you're in the office. I doubt she would storm out then. Hope I helped.

Maybe try showing her the facts plain and clear. Print out some pictures of what smoking does to your lungs, get some statistics, anything that could help prove to her that what she is doing is reallyy hurting her. And above all, always show your love for her. (: If nothing else, look around here: http://www.smokefree.gov/

Tell them her much you care about them and that you don't want to loose her and how bad smoking is for her health. Also tell them how bad your life would be with out them. You need to find a way to get her attention and then talk to her, like telling her that she is being selfish.

sit her down and show her pictures of what her lungs look like after 20 years of smoking and a picture of a lung with lung cancer and a normal lung and tell her how much u love her and that u dont want to look her to something that could have been prevented hope this helps

just ask her if she would be willing to speak with a doctor and that if she gives up smoking you'll join her and give up something you really like-however, I would be more concerend about the drinking I think
