What does antibiotics do to a dental abscess?

What are the causes of abscess? It was drained, but it comes back even with antibiotics medications.?

  • Abscess appears on the buttom,it was massive and had a very high smell.loss alot of weight.Doc. said if it keep reoccurring he would recommend further surgery to cut out the root. The doc. really don't want to go that route, that is why he keep on prescribing antibiotics.

  • Answer:

antibotics are great for eliminating infection, however, what I used once when I had gone through the same process that you have, is: Hydrogen Peroxide Topical Solution. Place a small amount in your mouth, DO NOT SWALLOW IT, and swish this solution around inside your mouth, for about one minute, it tastes horrible, but it helps to kill the infection and does not interfer with the actions of the antibotics the dentist is prescribing for you to take internally. This should eliminate some of the swelling associated with a drained abcess, and if you repeat this process four or five times each day, it may help you to feel better, but I am not a medical professional nor am I a dentist, I have used this type of home application to help kill the infection that I had inside my mouth and it does work. If you are unsure about doing this, then call your dentist and ask them if it would be alright for you to use Hydrogen Peroxide to gargle with. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Good Luck! Thank you

What do you mean by an abscess appearing "on the buttom", where is it? If you mean buttock, it sounds like a carbuncle Carbuncle: Most common causative agent is Staphylococcus aureus, and you probably got it through contact route. And it is contagious. If you treatment is not working, did you doctor get a specimen for culture and antibiotic sensitivity? One more question, are you diabetic?

KDFC

It sounds like a perianal abscess (i'm assuming cuz you said its on your bottom). This is common in diabetics although you can get them even if you are not diabetic. The only way to prevent it from recurring is by surgically removing it. An abscess is a sac filled with fluid which gets infected (leading to the nasty smell). When the fluid is drained it is a temporary measure because the sac is still there and will eventually refill with fluid and get reinfected. This is why you need to have that sac surgically removed to prevent recurrence. It is a short procedure so not sure why your doc doesn't want to do it unless you have medical conditions which would put you at risk for surgery. Antibiotics are a temporary measure and will not provide a cure.
