How do I get rid if a mouth ulcer?

  • I bit the side of my mouth the other day, and this huge ulcer's formed there. I'm struggling to eat as it stings like hell when I eat. I wouldn't be to bothered but when I looked at it, it looks huge and theres a black mark in the middle of it. I've never seen this so was wondering if it's anything to be worried about? Also anyone suggest good ways of getting rid of mouth ulcers quickly. I've tried bongela, and some steroid based one and there rubbish.

    That's happened to me too. Carmex or Burt's Bee lip balm will get rid of it in a day or two.. but you have to pile it on and keep it on all day and night for fast results.

Keep using the Bonjela to numb the pain. You have to make a direct hit for it to be effective - takes a few minutes and stings at first. Your body will take care of the healing in a few days, though it'll only be painful for 1 or 2 at most. Your mouth is so full of bacteria that exposing it via a bite or cut will usually lead to an ulcer. Nothing to worry about. If it's still as big in a couple of days, see the doctor.

Hi kalamist, sorry to hear about your mouth ulcer but I think I can help! About 2 weeks ago, I was in EXACTLY the same situation as you are in (it's horrid!) so I was trying to find the best cure for it when I stumbled upon an answer on wikipedia (i think it was that website) and it suggested a few things like using mouthwash, putting soap in your mouth, but they didn't work for me, but then, the last listed cure was to wash my mouth out with brine (warm, salted water.) for about 20-30 seconds. So I tried it and went to sleep, and the next morning I couldn't feel a thing! So I suggest u try that, or wait until it goes. Hope this helps!

Most ulcers are simple and probably viral in origin, though the specific causal virus for these 'apthous ulcers' is unknown. However the description you give is far from typical and without knowing your age, past history and tobacco history I am unhappy about giving a management recommendation. I suggest you show the ulcer to either your GP or dentist first to confirm it is nothing more sinister.

Use Friars Balsam, dab it on with your finger at night, stings like hell when you put it on but the ulcer will be gone in the morning.
