Has anyone ever been to a immunologist? Should i go?
-
Im CONSTANTLY sick. Over the years i've had ecoli, mono, strep, bronchitis, flu, sinus infections, etc. Some of those i've had MANY times. I have even been hospitalized for the flu recently...had a temp. of 103 that wouldnt break, was vomitting, & was so dehydrated i had to be hooked up to an IV for days. They really didnt find anything wrong with me & figured it was just a bad case of the flu. Now all of a sudden i have this red, itchy rash on my back, shoulders, neck & its spreading. Im exhausted & feeling overall crappy. Im goin to make another doc. appoint....i feel like the doctors office is my second home. Should i go see an immunologist & see if theres something wrong with me that my doctors havent noticed? Im really beginning to wonder if i have some sort of immune deficiency or something. Any input, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated....

I sympathize with you! I get sick constantly too, and every time I get over one, the next day something else seems to come on. You said that the Dr determined nothing was 'wrong' with you. What tests did he do to determine this? It is possible for people to have weakened or dysfunctional immune systems for various reasons. One possibility is that you have Ebbstein Barr virus or cytomegalovirus, which encode into your DNA and never leave, activating whenever you get stressed out and making you 'get sick'. There are blood tests that can check for these. Allergies may be another cause, as can things like black mold and fungus spores in the air of your home/office. Also, if you have little kids, they can be excellent reservoirs for all kinds of nasty bugs, and will pass them onto you easily. Another possibility is nutritional deficiency and/or lack of sleep. If you are deficient in certain minerals, such as zinc, cobalt, etc, your immune system may not be able to ramp up enough to fight off viruses and bacteria before they take hold. In this case, take a multivitamin high in zinc -- Zicam is also excellent -- and it usually at least makes them very mild. Sleep is also critical for immunity -- you need 8+ a night regularly. It could also be a sign of something more severe, like AIDS, cancer, or other diseases. This would be unlikely though, so don't worry. If you had AIDS, you would probably get a type of cancer too called Karposi sarcoma that only AIDS patients get. Finnally, to address your question, if your PC physician is not giving you the help you need, and nutritional supplements don't work, then I would definitely get a referral to see an immunologist. I am considering doing it myself!

It couldn't hurt to see an immunologist about this. It's definitely worth pursuing. You may just have a weakened immune system from stress, or you may just be having one of those years where you catch every bug that goes by you. But if you feel like something is definitely not right, you should keep seeing doctors until you find one that can help you. Make sure you are taking steps yourself to make your immune system stronger, though. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and try to reduce the stress in your life. Hang in there -- I hope you feel better soon!

Can't hurt to see an Immunologist. Some of what you describe are viral and some are bacterial infections. For most viral infections, there is no cure, just treat the symptoms and ride it out. A rash is common with viral infections and fever, usually treat with steriods (prednisone) and benadryl. When you see a doctor, make sure they take a culture, ie, throat culture, sputum culture. Some docs will prescribe antibiotics for say, a sore throat, saying it could be strep without testing for it, and it may turn out to be a viral infection causing your throat pain. In the meantime, you've taken antibiotics which will not only kill bad bacteria, but good bacterial as well, leaving your immune system weaken. Docs do this because patients demand medicine, not understanding the concept. Follow up with your doctor. Wash your hands frequently. Drink plently of fluids, and get plenty of rest. If possible, try to decrease your stress.
