Dry eyes or allergic conjunctivitis?

Can you have conjunctivitis without getting sticky eyes?

  • My eyes are redder than usual, sore and feels like there is sand in them. (There isn't anything in them though) I know to be sure I have to go to the Doctor, but I want to know if you can have conjunctivitis without the discharge you'd normally get.

  • Answer:

Hi Emily, Yes, you can. A viral conjunctivitis may just leave your eyes looking slightly red and feeling sore with or without a watery discharge. This is a likely diagnosis, especially if it is affecting both eyes. The vast majority of 'red eyes' go away on their own but if you experience any chages in your vision, the pain becomes more severe or you experience nausea/vomiting then ensure you seek medical help ASAP to rule out potentially more serious diagnoses. Hope this helps. Rhys.
