What happens if there is a Swine Flu Pandemic?
-
I'm a little worried about the swine flu and i would like to know what a pandemic is, and how it will affect the country. I heard from a friend that schools will be shut down. Please give me all the information you can. Thanks.

Answer:
A pandemic is a world wide situation. The reason for closing schools is to lessen the spread of the disease. In 1918 there was a pandemic, the "Spanish Flu" which incidentally started in the U.S., that was devastating. Although a pandemic today could be just as devastating let me give you a few thoughts that might ease your mind. First, in progressive countries sanitation makes it easy for us to keep our hands and homes clean, thus help to prevent transmission of the disease. In crowded areas such as schools or other public building such as stores and confined spaces such as elevators you risk coming in contact with viruses on doors, toilet handles, pens and pencils etc. . . If during an epidemic you were to keep close to home and limit yourself to crowded or confined areas and you kept clean your chance of avoiding the flu would be pretty good. A correction to Erin 7 who writes below, the "Spanish Flu" was an example of the bird flu. It appeared as mysteriously as it disappeared, later to be found in swine, hense the avian, swine and human viruses have mutated.

If there is a full blown pandemic, it would be reasonable to think some public gathering places would close for a week or two or more. In Mexico, schools, restaurants, stores, churches, etc. are closed. People give the disease to one another so I'd assume by keeping people away from each other, you minimize the opportunities to spread. The last time we had a full-blown pandemic was in 1918. The world was a different place then. They didn't have planes. Some places closed public places immediately and suffered less infections than the places who were slow to close.

We will all die. Basically. Hope i helped :P
A pandemic is when an infectious disease spreads across a population of any size/type. Swine flu seems like it's like normal flu strains, it affects children and will probably affect the elderly and people with compromised immune systems as it spreads. Probably affected schools will be shut down. But it varies according to your city and it's size. Some people may try to compare this to the 1918 Spanish flu. That flu strain targeted healthy, young people who would normally get the flu and get over it. It was a completely different strain.

AIDS is a pandemic. It just means a virus that's global. Doesn't mean a virus that will wipe out humanity, like many think. Just means cases are being reported all over and that's just because people travel more than ever. At a congressional hearing, Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sought to strike a balance: No one knows what the never-before-seen virus ultimately will do, but so far in most U.S. cases people are recovering without even needing a doctor's care. The big message is to try not to spread infection. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/med_swine_flu_us
