Does stomach flu (gastro) ever cause severe coughing, or last longer than a few days?
-
Hi, I've been very sick for 5 straight days now. In researching online, my symptoms match gastroenteritis (salmonella specifically it seems) perfectly, except I have also developed a severe cough and a few cold-like symptoms too in the past few days. Also, most cases of gastro don't last this long it seems. I know it's nothing I ate. I'm still unable to hold down most food without throwing up, I have diarrhea (sometimes green...sorry that's gross), abdominal cramps, have a fever and am extremely sore and weak. There's sometimes a little blood in the vomit, but I'd guess this is from the "wear" I've put on my system with all the vomiting/coughing. I have no insurance so would like to avoid a doctor, and from what I've found online about gastro, they couldn't help much anyway. I've followed all the obvious tips - drinking liquid, resting, etc. What seems like a long-lasting stomach flu with heavy coughing? Any advice or suggestions? I'm happy to answer any follow-up questions. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I too had a flu lasting 7 weeks long; leaving me with a nasty cough and weeks off work. I contracted the Nor- walk virus from the work place, and was it something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. There is no such thing as the stomach flu.The "stomach bug" virus is most commonly the Norwalk virus...and it does sound like you have food poisoning..not a stomach bug. It is possible that you picked up food poisoning AND a cold too (coughing is not a symptom of salmonella but its still possible to have other illnesses as well) As for your illness, only a doctor would be able to diagnose you but it does sound like food poisoning to me. ****IF there is blood in your vomit, this is NOT a typical NOR a good sign and you MUST go to the doctor/ER.Although healthy adults usually recover from food poisoning just fine ,complications can happen and blood in the vomit is never a good sign. It would also be good to ask someone to pick you up some gatorade and pedialyte. That should be your sole source of liquid intake.Water, soda all other drinks cannot replenish your electrolytes...only an electrolyte drink can. Good luck.

you my dear have the Flu. the bad one. the one we take shots for. get away from me lol. im so sorry that is sooo miserable. Drink plenty of liquids. dont worry about food. your tummy is not ready for that. Blood in the vomit is NOT good. you need to call doc about that and ask his opinion. your tummy is in turmoil
