Have sore throat with brown mucus but no cough, no fever. nose was runny, but now dry. Is it strep? what to do?
-
I have a sore throat. I woke up with a bit of brownish red mucus in my throat, which I hocked up. My nose was runny a few days ago, but i assumed it was from the dust in my room. I overblew it to the point that it bled! (maybe thats why I had red on my mucus), but now its dry. I'm not coughing, there's no mucus in my lungs or anything. As of now, my throat hurts but there is no nasty mucus coming out of my throat (it only happens in the morning after I wake up), even though its pretty sore. I'm pretty sure I don't have a fever. My brother has some sort of sinus infection, but with him, he's constantly coughing up mucus (its stuck in throat/lungs or something). Did I get what he has? They dont really seem alike, because I'm not coughing at all. I just want to know what I have, and how long it will last, because I'm having a dinner party this saturday. what should I eat? Can I exercise? HELP! It's not strep, right??

Brown mucus with a sore throat means you have a throat infection. If your throat is really sore to the point where it hurts to swallow, you have a fever, and the back of your throat is swollen and red with little white dots on it, you have strep. In any case you should see a doctor and have him prescribe some antibiotics, just to be on the safe side. He can also do a throat culture for strep if you think you have it- this takes about 10 minutes. If you have just a regular throat infection, then with antibiotics, it will probably go away within several days, or at least get better to the point where you'll be able to comfortably host your dinner party. You'll still be able to get over it without antibiotics, it will just take much longer.

maybe see a doctor? Or try this: drink at least eight cups of tea in one day and see if that helps. Also try water, lemon and honey. yum!
