Vitamin C?

Vitamin C and colds/flu?

  • Has anyone used high doses of vitamin C to help recover from colds and flu faster? If so, has it worked for you? I'm just curious because this month I've had the flu twice and both times have been downing alot of vitamin C tablets, and the flu has cleared up very quickly within 2/3 days. Is it just a coincidence, or does vitamin C actually work to help reduce the severity and duration of colds and flu? Is there any danger in taking high doses of vitamin C even though it is water soluble?

  • Answer:

Vitamin C is a fantastic antioxidant and can help a lot of people to boost their immune system enough to help a cold (which is why you hear it so often). Most people can take 7-9,000 mg of Vit C, but it's safest to check with a doctor that knows about suppliments to see what should be your personal max (as most bottles of Vit C list 1-2,000 max). Linus Pauling (the one that "discovered" Vit C) actually took almost 10,000 mg daily.... but I know some people who have only been able to handle 500-1,000 mg (most of them because of the acidity and some of them had upset stomachs because of the acidity).

I've used high doses of Vitamin C to help fight nasty colds before. But I also used echinacea and garlic pills to help fight it. I think you can take as much vitamin c as you want.

I have a dad for a doctor and he always recommends Vit. C when someone is sick...our family is a large proponent of doubling up on Vit. C when sick. However, Vit. C is one of those vitamins that does not stay in the system so daily doses are important. As with any vitamin, herb or lifestyle of health, overdoing is a potential hazzard. Taking regular doses when you are healthy is recommended but doubling up during this time is not advisable.
