Can you take antibiotics once a day to prevent colds and bacterial infectins like Cocycline?
-
My friend takes antibiotics once a day to prevent infections. I thought there could be complications from taking this pill every day like its an aspirin(lol)

Answer:
Colds are viral. Antibiotics neither prevent nor cure viral infections. Depending on the person, the immune system and the type of bacterial infection, it is sometimes helpful to take a daily preventive dose. One place this idea is used is in preventing urinary tract infections ; also in preventing recurrent ear infections in children.

Although overuse of antibiotics can be harmful, there are a few circumstances in which a doctor may prescribe daily antibiotics to prevent bacterial infections. For example, I am a female with spina bifida, which causes me to be at extremely high risk for UTI. I take a low dose of antibiotic daily to prevent UTI. In the past, I temporarily stopped taking the antibiotic at the direction of a doctor because the one I had been taking was no longer being made. I promptly developed a string of UTIs, so my doctor again prescribed a daily antibiotic. This may be inappropriate in some cases, but in my case, the daily antibiotic does prevent me from getting UTIs and the potential problems that go along with the UTIs. Antibiotics should never be prescribed to treat colds or flu because colds and flu are viral infections, and antibiotics only kill bacteria.

I do not know what Cocycline is and when you search for it on google all that comes up is a link to this question. Antibiotics DO NOT work on colds. Colds are a virus and antibiotics DO NOT work on viruses! A bacterial infection it will work on, however as a Pharmacy technician I do not know of any indication why someone should take an antibiotic on a daily basis, unless it is for acne, or in some instances child may have a course of preventative antibiotics. This second instance is not common at all. An adult would certainly not need to do this. Usually if an antibiotic is taken too much any bacteria become resistant to it and it will no longer work. This could mean that if your friend does have an infection that requires antibiotics that none will work. If I knew what Cocycline was then maybe I could give a more informative answer.
