How common are false negative results from an HIV test?

Can HIV be transmitted even when test results of a positive person come out negative?

  • I am well versed in HIV/AIDS research: I know the do's and don'ts, but there is a severe lack of any new information on HIV/AIDS. I don't need a lecture, but have only one specific question: If an HIV positive person is healthy enough to test negative can the virus still be transmitted to an unprotected partner?

  • Answer:

Yes. It may take 3 to 6 months for someone to test positive for antibodies after they get infected (Most people test positive within 3 months.) , but someone who is infected can transmit the virus to other people within a day or 2 after getting infected. Also: Someone who tests positive for antibodies, but whose viral load is undetectable, can still transmit the virus to other people.

An HIV positive person can be healthier than a non HIV negative person but he will always test positive, he can't be healthy enough to test negative. It is in his blood, nothing to do with being healthy or not.
