What is a flu pandemic?

What can we do to stop ourselves catching this flu pandemic?

  • It looks as though the flu pandemic will reach us sooner or later. What should we be doing? Do we need to start wearing masks? Is there anything we can eat or drink which will build up our immunity? Will it help if we get lots of sleep so our bodies aren't run down or will we just catch it regardless if we come into close contact with someone who is unknowingly spreading the disease.

  • Answer:

-Wash your hands frequently. -Don't touch your eyes, nose, or mouth -Don't eat with your hands -Avoid crowded public places -Eat healthy -Get lots of sleep and sufficient exercise -Avoid sick people

you can reduce your risk of infection with a few changes in your behavior. Wash your hands frequently, if you don't have soap and water, use hand sanitizer, do it hourly when in public. Face masks are not going to help, unless you wear a professional N-95 mask, you cannot stop a virus that way. Do not touch your face at all, without first washing your hands...that is the primary mode of transmission, hand to mouth, or nose or eyes, the virus invades through the mucous membranes. Avoid large crowds, wash after touching public surfaces like doors, counters, ATM keys.

If you are in the UK i wouldn't worry. The UK and france have the best stockpiles in the world to deal with any breakout using tamiflu and other broad spectrum drugs.

Ensure you get the annual flu vaccine recommended by the government as it will protect you from the predicted strains of flu prevalent at that time and reduce the mutation of "super flu" virus. Good hand hygiene is important as is avoiding large crowds if you are feeling under the weather. Eating a good diet high in nutrients and vitamins and generally looking after yourself.

Of course it won't, look at the evidence. 86 People have now died in Mexico, around 30-40 have been diagnosed in MEDCs and none have died. We have much better healthcare, and we have enough Tamiflu stockpiled for the whole country, compared to Mexicos stupid amount which stands at 1m doses, and for a country of 109m people, they have little or no cause to worry at all. You'll be fine.

I think that washing your hands is going to be the major part and eating healthy to keep your immune system happy. But i think that yes we could catch it regardless!(which is scary!)
