How can I cure a urinary tract infection?

Any OTC medications that can cure a urinary tract infection?

  • I have all the symptoms of a urinary tract infection. According to all the research I've done, the infection seems to still be in my bladder and hasn't spread. I really don't have the time to go to the doctor right now, so I'd love it if I could treat it OTC. Any suggestions?

    Hi: Cranberry juice, cranberry juice and cranberry juice. Oh, did I mention cranberry juice? If you can't drink thousands of gallons of cranberry juice, it does come in the form of a capsule. Check the herbal suppliment isle in your local pharmacy. Here are some other tried and tryed recipes: Mix 1/4 tsp of baking SODA in about 1/2 glass (4 oz) of water. Drink 2 glasses of plain water the the mixture you just made. Yuk, I know but do it anyway... The baking soda helps to create a less acidic environment inside your bladder which makes it harder for the bacteria to thrive so they begin to die off. Don't drink drinks with a high acid content as that will defeat the purpose of the baking soda nad water mixture. Plus bacteria love to live in a place with lots of acid. the less acid you can have in your bladder, the less bacteria you will have. Garlic is a huge wonderful medicinal herb. Garlic seems to HATE bacteria and thrives of killing them. So try this one for those bladder bacteria... Garlic Tea: (I hope you like garlic) peel a few fresh cloves of garlic. The kind you but pre sliced or pre chopped in a jar will not work. So peel a few cloves, smash and mash as my boys say, smash and mash those cloves smash and mash them well. drop them in a mug of hot water and let it steep for about 5 minutes. If you dont have any fresh garlic but you have garlic POWDER (NOT the salt) then add abut a tsp into the hot water and drink up but be careful not to burn yourself on the hot liquid. And the last one I can think of is an herb called Goldenseal. Goldenseal is not so fond of Ecoli bacteria which is the most common bacteria that causes UTI's. But Goldenseal also has a bonus to it. It will also stimulate your immune system and helps with the swelling in the urinart tract. I just looked up in my book the usual dosage of Goldensel to take daily. My books state you can take 500 - 1,000mg of Goldenseal extract daily for up to one week. Do not take it more than 1 week. I hope you feel better soon, take care. Be safe and be well

Find the time to see a physician, even if you just go to an urgent care clinic. Urinary tract infections usually don't completely go away on their own; you should take an antibiotic, like Septra. In the meantime, drink a lot of water. If left unattended, it is possible that your simple UTI could progress into a worse infection. I know of a UTI that required intravenous infusions to clear up because the patient didn't have it treated promptly. Don't mess with your health, see a physician.

Bacterial urinary tract infections typically start in the urethra and spread to the bladder. Phenazopyridine (brand names Azo-Gesic, Azo-Standard, Pyridium) can temporarily relieve some of the SYMPTOMS as it is a urinary tract analgesic. It will color your urine a deep orange color. YOU MUST SEE A PHYSICIAN FOR AN ANTIBIOTIC TO CURE A UTI. Untreated UTI's can result in kidney damage and, if the infection spreads to your blood, sepsis and death.

AZO Standard gives me the best relief for UTI symptoms, but like others have said, the only cure is an antibiotic. Do not let this go on too long because the infection can travel up into your kidneys and you will be very sick with chills and fever. My doctor also told me that untreated UTI's and kidney infections can cause damage to your kidneys. AZO Standard also sells OTC urine tests that supposedly detect whether or not you have an infection. Your best course of treatment is a doctor. I sympathize with you! UTI's are not fun. Drink lots and lots of water. Cranberry juice relieves the symptoms as well. Feel better soon!

You can try cranberry juice. Not the cranberry cocktails. 100% cranberry juice (like Knudson's). Oh it's vile stuff, but it's supposed to help. And LOTS AND LOTS of water. I've had exactly one in my life, and I tried to take care of it myself, but honestly after a couple of days I ended up calling the doctor. It would seem like I would ALMOST get it gone, but then it would come back.

cranberry juice-- and lots of it!! i think it's the tannins in the juice--but I'm not sure. It works, though.

I honestly have not heard of an OTC medication for urinary tract infections.I know they sell the test though. If it is in the beginning stages of one, buy cranberry juice and drink a lot of that and a lot of water. If you catch it early, by drinking a lot of that, you can possibly flush out the bacteria. If it is bad though, you should go to the doctor. You will need antibiotics.

At Wal-Mart you can get something called Azo Standard. It is an OTC strength of something called Azo Gantrasin. It will turn your urine bright red but it does help.

AZO or Uristat will make you feel better but go see a Dr. ASAP because the infection may still be there without the symptoms. Also cranberry juice in between.

There is a section at any drug store or grocery store--AZO and URISTAT... also drink up on cranberry juice (not fruit cocktail ones.. try Ocean's Sprey Cranberry or any other 100% juice). What you need is the acidity to help clear up unwanted bacteria so that you can get back to normal. IF symptoms last a week, go see a doctor ASAP!! Hope this helps. Good luck & get better soon!!! =)
