How can you prevent pink eye?

I have a family member over my house who has pink eye, how can I prevent myself from getting infected?

  • I've been washing my hands and not touching my eyes. But, I'm afraid of still getting it. Is there anything I can do to avoid contracting it at this point? The lady who has it is an adult, and she's been very careful all day....Though, her two kids had pink eye, too. They're over it, but maybe they could pass it from my aunt to me somehow?

    Good handwashing is your first line of defense..also keep this in mind..If your family member goes into the bathroom..and does not use good hand washing..or perhaps didnt wash at all..but then you happen to go in there a bit later...you do wash your hands..but..after you have washed them..you touched/grabbed the same door knob that your family did..and may have left the germs there..only to be picked up by you..Good hand washing is the following get the hand towels(clean ones) or paper towels..and have them ready to grab after washing..like layin close to the sink..then, wash your hands with warm, soapy water..also wash under your nails with a nail brush..wash each hand for ..well, i will let ya slide since you are non medical personnel..wash each hand for 3 minutes..DO NOT REACH UP AND TURN OFF THE WATER YET....dry your hands with the clean towel..then USE THE TOWELS..PAPER TOWELS..TO TURN THE FAUCET OFF..then discard towels or put in dirty laundry. It is also to have an extra towel..paper towel..laying on the counter top as well..after you have washed and dried your hands..tossed the first towel..use the second one to turn the door knob or handle that will get you out of the bathroom..Sound extreme? Not really. I am a nurse..and thus far..in 24 years, I have yet to contract any viruses or diseases such as that..Luck? Nah..It's called covering your butt!!..good luck!

Don't let her touch anything and wash your hands! It is so contagious... It was pretty rude for her to come over being contagious like that.

Get away from them and wash your hand real good. Don't touch or come in contact with anything they touch.

Stay away for a few days...it's always worse on adults...my mom had it for a week and her eye was almost completely swelled shut and my younger brother was over it in 2-3 days

Wash everything. Use water with a little bleach in it to wipe off countertops, door knobs, drawer pulls, the toilet handle, window sills, etc - anything that you might touch. Spray Lysol on things you can't wipe, like your computer keyboard. Get the liquid hand sanitizer and clean your hands periodically. Same goes for the woman with pinkeye, and for everyone else in the house.

the condition is spread by contact with the drainage fluids from the person with pink eye, and you know she came in contact with it while caring for her children. Stay clear of the fluids and you'll be fine. Don't panic, don't fault find, she can't do anything except get well, and that's only about 7 to 10 days.

i went to the doctor and he said pink eye wasnt air born. you have to come in contact with the stuff that is coming out of her eyes, which is pretty easy. as long as you're doing what you say you are you shouldn't get it. I have 4 kids and i had pink eye and only one got it! so it depends

it is only contagous 24 hours from the break out if it hasent been 24 hrs she should be wearing an eye patch to keep from touching it and spreading it..
