How to prevent getting pink eye?

This weekend I am watching a family friends house. Last month two of the family members had pink eye. How can I go about on avoiding pink eye because I really don't want to get it.
Answer:

There are 5 kinds of conjunctivitis -- traumatic, allergic, chemical, viral and bacterial. Which kind did the two family members have?? Only two are contagious. Conscientious hand washing helps a great deal as well as avoiding touching the eyes. Replace eye makeup every 3-4 months. But as it was a month ago, why are you worried about getting something the family doesn't have????? And on top of that, if you're house-sitting that means the family won't even be there anyway!
