How can you tell if you have an ear infection?

  • I think i have an ear infection but i'm not sure how can i tell?

  • Answer:

The only way to tell for sure if you have an ear infection is to have a health professional look inside your ear with an otoscope. There are, however, other things that can mimic an ear infection. Sometimes, when you have a cold, sore throat or allergies, it will cause swelling in your inner ear canal which will cause ear pain, but not an ear infection. Try taking a decongestant (like Pseudophed). It will reduce the swelling in your inner ear canal, thus relieving the ear pain. If this works, you don't have an ear infection. Water in your outer ear canal (as from swimming) can cause an irritation that causes pain, but not an infection. Your can get over-the-counter drops for your ear canal if you suspect this. Do all of your teeth feel fine. Tooth infections can sometimes cause ear pain. Also, have you been grinding/clenching your teeth. This can also cause ear pain. Ear pain that is increased while eating or chewing is usually caused by problems with your jaw joint. Try applying heat to the ear with a warm washcloth or heating pad to help ease the pain. You can also take Tylenol or Ibuprophen to help with the pain. Ear infections usually follow a cold, sinus infection or sore throat and will only clear up with antibiotics. There are many signs of ear infections, but not everyone will have all of the same symptoms. You need to go to the doctor if: -the ear pain isn't relieved with the above treatment after 2 days of home treatment -if the ear pain increases despite what you do -if you have a fever over 102 -if there is any drainage from your ear -if there is redness or swelling behind or in front of your ear -if you have any other symptoms of a serious illness such as a headache with severe stiff neck or irritability.
